RE: Proof that MFGG doesn't need to be dead - GeneSu730 - 08-03-2021 I don't want to sound like an attention seeking troll but why are people leaving MFGG? Is it because it is the summer season? I noticed that my threads have been getting less views and replies. RE: Proof that MFGG doesn't need to be dead - King Piranha Plant - 08-05-2021 @GeneSu730 Vitiman, Q-Nova and General Guy already explained it pretty well - just read the first page of this thread. As an additional thought, it seems some days go by with low activity, some days it's higher and a conversation gets everyone responding. I think people check in a lot every single day. But unless there's a noteworthy conversation going, people will just lurk for a while. RE: Proof that MFGG doesn't need to be dead - jas - 08-09-2021 Part of me just thinks the damage is done... implementing the CCC was the first step toward overpolicing and compartmentalisation. That, is an attitude shared by some of those remaining here which is a bit lowkey autistic, that thinks because the forum has "fan games" in the name that the purpose of discussion and gathering has to be fan games. Which fundamentally misunderstands how people talk and bond over a shared interest-- they don't all need to be creators as a prerequisite of being here. That kind of thinking led to the split where yeah... community harakiri, literally cutting out the community aspect like a foetus from its mother's womb and being surprised by it... not breathing and becoming necrotic... anyway yeah gross metaphor but this is pretty much my diagnosis. PPP should have made a comeback in early 08 after a 6 month hiatus or so & there were so many members you could have got some decent mods pretty easily RE: Proof that MFGG doesn't need to be dead - Mario - 08-16-2021 MFGG's obsession with its own past aside, I don't think the mistakes of the past are really all that important to why some things don't work now. It's all about the attitude and approach; whatever reputation mfgg has is something that can change, but I don't think the online reputation is too meaningful wrt to newer members who don't have any clue about any of that anyway. It's not like there's some better business bureau for online communities people check about this stuff- it's what they see when they come here after finding it from google or wherever else and their reactions to navigating that. RE: Proof that MFGG doesn't need to be dead - HellJumper - 09-02-2021 I only come on here occasionally to check on the few fangames I'm interested in (which rarely get updated), and to post sprites I'm working on. I could see myself and others being more active here if there was more to do, but I also struggle to think of anything super enticing. Really, I think it just comes down to the fact that activity breeds more activity. For an example, it's not very likely people are going to play an online game if there's hardly a player-base. Just like you're probably not going to join a Discord voice channel if there's nobody else in it, and very rarely do people want to be that first person in the call waiting for somebody else to join. But at the same time, I tend to prefer smaller communities. I haven't really hopped back into the MFGG Discord for the same reason I don't join many servers with over 100 people. Just too many cancerous folks. Too many people with attitudes I find annoying, and I say that as somebody who cringes at stuff I've said in the past as well. I think we all have that to an extent. Another reason I prefer smaller communities is because it's much easier for people to actually get to know each other. Another user typically isn't just another user. But I get that a forum isn't exactly meant to be just a small chat for friends or anything, so I'm unsure as to what I'm even getting at here. Just thinking out loud, really. Regarding the toxicity, that's also just an issue with bigger Discord servers in general. I'm not sure what would save the forum, and I'm also not sure if it's even worth it when Discord is a thing. Not to say the Forum should just be deleted. But I can't really think of anything that would entice people, let alone myself to use it. It's just kind of... there. Sorry, not a very helpful reply. Just thinking out loud as I stated before. As they stand, they're an oddly-renovated (for something so seldomly used) relic that most people just use the official Discord server for instead. I wouldn't know that from personal experience mind you, I'm not in there. So for people like me, who don't really feel like being in the MFGG Discord, there isn't really anywhere to check up on. But you know, in spite of that... every now and again, I do feel like loading up this dumb site to see what awaits me. It's been a ghost town the last few months! Even compared to prior to that, when it was also a ghost town but somehow slightly more thriving than currently. But regardless, I still check it from time to time. Maybe once a month, I'd say. Just for nostalgia's sake. I'm also still pretty tight with a couple of MFGG staffers, so I hear about stuff from them occasionally. I still see really cool stuff get posted to the main site now and then, like that weird Essence of Waluigi game and whatnot. Not to mention all the cool sprites people still submit. But hm, I wonder what the ultimate fate of this forum will be. I'm still shocked that Super Mario World hacking (which I assumed was an old internet thing that would be dead these days) has more active community now than our crazy MFGG that's been so filled with wacky history and personality over all these years. |
