I agree with this. I replayed it recently and the gameplay, while interesting, was underwhelming and at some points annoying what with the excessive pixl and character switching. Some of the environment graphics are also a little unappealing in my eyes. The story is really where the game shines, though.

I'm pretty certain that was an exaggeration. Of course not everyone in Paper Mario is a Toad or it'd be called Paper Toad, but the series used to be full of unique new characters and now they've all been replaced with existing, usually overused characters which results in the NPCs becoming all generic toads and the bosses and enemies becoming ones we've seen over and over again.

This topic has proven to be very important indeed.
As for the original questions, I've always thought Kamek (at least the Kamek in Yoshi's Island) was a guy, and I've also had a feeling that Kamek and Kammy (and possibly Kamella) were related in some way. I don't think this relationship has ever been confirmed, though.

I think Kamella is his aunt. She doesn't look like his mother because she isn't very old and doesn't have white hair nor occupies the role that Kamek does now.
Now, that Paper Mario thing doesn't make much sense. Why are the Mario and Luigi (I think) games allowed to have new characters/enemies while the Paper Mario games aren't?

Regarding Kammy, Kamek, and Magikoopas, I said this earlier, before the fight:

I don't think there's any debate as to whether or not Kammy and Kamek are magikoopas. They clearly are. We just don't know the names of the other magikoopas so they get bunched together while Kamek and Kammy have their own identities. Just like how Captain Toad is just a toad, but he's different to us from other toads because he has a name.
