WWDC 2018 - Mario - 06-04-2018 Today, in about 10 minutes, is Apple's WWDC for 2018. Here's what people expect to see: taken from here - iOS 12 - macOS 10.14 (I'm sure it drives Apple bonkers that this number doesn't line up with the other ones) - tvOS 12 - new notebooks and iMacs - new iPad Pro - iPhone SE 2 (?) - a Beats speaker with Siri integration - AirPower and New Wireless AirPods Charging Case - New Apple Watch Bands and iPhone/iPad Cases Doesn't sound too exciting but I'd like to know more about an iPhone SE 2. I love the small form factor, i don't think anyone is making a really good phone at that size anymore. Let's hope they announce some cool features for their new OS versions. RE: WWDC 2018 - Mario - 06-04-2018 No hardware announcements other than a pride band for the Apple Watch, but the software they shared was interesting enough. Here's some highlights (there were more things but I didn't find them too interesting): - iOS 12 is a lot faster than iOS 11 - New app cauled "measure" that uses your camera to measure things. Not sure if I could even describe it right, but it's a pretty good use of technology there. - FaceTime groupchat with up to 32 participants. I don't use facetime so it doesn't really matter to me, but that many people in a video chat is pretty absurd. - Animoji can now detect your tongue! - Animoji now has Memoji, which is a personalized avatar. - WatchOS 5 has a walkie talkie mode to communicate between watches. Pretty neat; not sure if I get an Apple watch if I'll even know anyone with one though LOL - tvOS 12 will detect your cable provider based on internet connection and give you the channels you deserve automatically. I had a samsung tv that kind of did this with its Verizon app, it was really cool but their deal with Verizon fell through only a month or two into me having the TV. Glad to see this concept is still around. Apple TV is a much better purchase than a cable box - macOS 10.14 has a dark mode! - iOS apps are going to be much easier to port to macOS; pretty big news for software for macOS. Reminds me of android apps running on select chromebooks, though this seems more sophisticated RE: WWDC 2018 - VinnyVideo - 06-04-2018 I've never been an Apple person, but if I was, I'd probably find a way to use the measuring app if it's reasonably accurate. None of these things sound revolutionary, but they are nice incremental improvements. RE: WWDC 2018 - Mario - 06-04-2018 It's really good to see them focus on incremental improvements rather than big revolutionary things to be honest; when they're rushing out features all the time quality control tends to dip a bit and these kinds of updates mean they're trying to stay on top of that. Another big piece of news that I don't think they mentioned during the conference is that they're deprecating OpenGL support on macOS. This is honestly great news! Apple has never really prioritized OpenGL support whatsoever and their new graphics API Metal is leagues better than anything OpenGL could do (and also because it's theirs, they gotta take it seriously and support it). There's already a tool out there to convert Vulkan (an open source, cross-platform graphics api that's waaaaay better than opengl ever was) API requests to Metal requests. This is a great push for getting developers to stop using OpenGL and start using Vulkan to create cross-platform things. |
