Berry Island - SonicKade2048 - 06-30-2018 Intro I had an idea very long ago about making my own Mario-themed adventure known as Berry Island. As with many, MANY of my other projects, it went under a "hiatus" if I can even call them that anymore, and has since gone into the dust along with the multitude of other dead projects of mine, never to be revived again. EXCEPT IT WON'T Sort of This idea of mine has tried to be revived before, but with little to no success. I can't code my own games, since I've never learned any coding whatsoever, so the most I can do is make the concept and graphics. I've tried so many times to get this, and many other of my projects, off the ground and working, but I end up scrapping it due to laziness or it being "too difficult and/or tedious" for me to work on. Even then, I still want to share this idea with you all to know what your thoughts on it are. Just take note that this is not (And probably will not) be an actual game of sorts, maybe until I can learn to code in the future. Believe me, I've tried before, and coding just isn't my specialty. Concept Sketches Many of my ideas come from doodles or sketches I make when I'm bored or inspired. I've probably done more with Berry Island than I have anything else, though that could just be a straight-up lie. I don't really have time to look through every last project I've made just to prove myself wrong. Anyway, Berry Island had a few interesting details about itself that could differ from any normal Mario game, as it tends to mix in a few elements from Sonic as well. The images are somewhat large, so I'll put them in a spoiler, along with some details about said images. I'm not exactly sure what made me get the idea for Berry Island, but the least I can say is that I wanted to do something similar to Super Mario World. It was a great game in my eyes, and probably my favorite 2D Super Mario Bros. game of all time. I just wanted to do something with my own characters, at that. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave me a private message or just reply down below. Again, this won't be an actual game or have any game mechanics of some sort, it's just a fun little idea I never got around to that much. RE: Berry Island - originalpmfan - 07-13-2018 You can still code the game, just download any engine and try to find the lite engine of it. If you need sprites you can try using gimp. RE: Berry Island - Amine Retro - 07-13-2018 why not make a SMW hack? easier than coding. RE: Berry Island - VinnyVideo - 07-13-2018 What resources have you been using in your efforts to learn how to program? Some people learn best from books, videos, classes, asking a friend for help, or trial and error (though be careful with that last method!). There are a LOT of different ways people try to learn programming, and a lot of different ways people try to teach it. If one approach isn't working, try another one. Also, if you're having trouble getting started, I highly recommend starting by making a simple minigame, instead of making a more ambitious project. You might call it a minimum viable product approach. This strategy was designed with for-profit businesses in mind, but it works well with freeware projects too. Basically, you want to make a simple but complete game so you can gather feedback and increase your skills and confidence. And is also quite painful to code in new things, as you would need to learn ASM which could take months or even years. Also he showed a level editor like Mario Maker, which as for as I know is not possible in SMW. I too have lost interested in SMW hacking due to lack of motivation and determination, because you need a lot of that for a SMW hack. I also agree that ASM is hard to learn (and is not required at all), but pulling some stuff with it ends up being impressive most of the time. RE: Berry Island - YoshisIsland3 - 07-14-2018 Berry Island sounds more like a original game on it's own, than a Mario fangame, but there are some exceptions where a Mario fangame has no Mario elements in the title, mainly Q-Nova's Battle for the Future and a few others. This looks like a great concept, but like VinnyVideo said, you should try starting on making smaller projects before going big, I once tried to make a ambitious mario engine, but it all went down before I knew it, because I obviously wasn't ready, follow VinnyVideo's advice, like I said from before and start small. |
