How many hours are put into your fangame? - Mariotroid - 08-14-2018

Lately I feel like I'm not doing enough for my game. Some weeks I spend 16 hours working on a game a week divided by a few days. Lately I've been doing like 8 hours a week. It makes me feel guilty and stupid. I really should work harder. How many hours a week do you spend programming your game?

A youtuber called Tim Ruswick prescribes doing one thing a day of work. I would consider myself an intermediate programmer as I have made many games so I question whether or not I need to work everyday. Anyway, this is just my question of the day.

It depends. When I'm making good progress on game development, I try to do some work every day, and a lot of work on days when my motivation and free time are both high. 2-3 hours per day is probably the best pace I've ever been able to sustain.

If you're having trouble making steady progress, try reserving a certain time every day where you won't check your phone, e-mail, social media, or Discord/Skype. Maybe turn on some cool tunes, but don't have anything open that might distract you. Then work on your game for a while - the tweets will wait for you! I sometimes use this approach when I'm working on important stuff.

Try to minimize distractions, but don't beat yourself up if you find you can't make a lot of progress fast. Everyone creates at their own pace - and that's totally OK.

I wouldn't go about it trying to make yourself feel guilty or stupid. I've done that before...

As for me on the question, I don't work on it every day, and sometimes I take a few weeks off from game development. When I do work on it, I work on it any time I can get.

At peak, I can probably put upwards 40 hours a week into making video games, but its probably closer to like 25-30 recently.

Please don't use this information as a benchmark for how much work you should be doing and instead do your best to continue at your own pace.

My development time really fluctuates a lot. I can get at least 20 hours a week in for all the broad projects I'm doing, but it varies more than that when concerning specific fan games/indie games. Some of my projects might not even get worked on at all for a week or so when I'm under a bit of burnout from it (which has become a bit more common with me in recent years, unfortunately...).
