Stories for Games - Mariotroid - 10-28-2018

When about a do you start writing the story for your game? It's been two years to the month with Mario Holidays. I want to write a good story to go along with it. I want it to be heartfelt, so more like Super Paper Mario or Mario Galaxy. I need help with it. I havent decided when I will write the story as the game is still in its early ages (its only been.... two years??!!)

Anyway, how do you write the stories for your games and at what stage in development?

I usually write as I go because the story often isn't that important to what I make. That said, it sometimes makes for an incoherent story.

When I write my novellas I chart out a through line by making a series of somewhat coherent eventsĀ and formulate the basic characteristics of key characters. As for how the story flows through the events, I leave that up to my mind to guide me. Sometimes I remove events ore get to them in different orders than how they were plotted. Don't be afraid to gut your story now and again when writing, never get rid of the gutted moments though, you might be able to repurpose them later.
