The "who one-upped this" button - littlelum - 11-18-2018

You know that button that lets you see who one-upped a particular post? Since it is turned on by default what is the point of having the button? I you don't want to have it on, you have to manually turn it off on every post you come across, and by that time you already seen who one-upped it. So isn't being able to turn it off kind of pointless? Why not just get rid of the button and have it show by default? (Another option is to have it off by default, but that was how it originally worked and then it was changed to the current version)

I agree. Even if it's a type of ""preference"", even if hidden, it will still say the amount of people who 1-upped it, and enabling it to see them has pretty much just one extra line of text (probably more in certain devices and cases). That said, the real question is, how much can an extra line of text affect performance or scrolling?

I have changed some settings with the 1-ups bar so it will be displayed as collapsed by default. If there's any objections against this change, please feel free to let me know.

Didn't we have a topic that was the exact opposite of this where we made the 1ups visible by default?

I think that they should remain on.

Is it possible to add a setting in the user preferences menu to collapse/show 1ups by default?

Possibly the ideal solution

Except that the TRUE ideal solution is to remove the collapsing functionality altogether, Change My Mind

Guys you're just repeating what littlelum said in the first post.

Personally, I don't see why we make the 1-Ups invisible by default. It kinda feels a bit unnecessary to make one click just to see who 1-Upped one post. I can understand if posts were to regularly receive hundreds of 1-Ups, but right now they tend to only get a few 1-Ups; I don't think I have seen a post get past 20 1-Ups. As @Kaguya Houraisan pointed out, the list of 1-Ups is only a single line to text at the moment, which doesn't really add to much to a page's height and I'm sure it doesn't has much effect on performance.

So, I think 1-Ups should be visible by default at the moment, but there should be an option to turn them off. If we started getting lots of 1-Ups all the time, then perhaps we can reconsider this again.
