We should do another Music Comp - VinnyVideo - 01-04-2019

It's been several months since we've done a Music Competition. The last one didn't get a single entry, which was a bummer indeed. That said, Music Competitions have usually been the hardest competitions to get a lot of entries, since making music has a steeper learning curve than drawing or spriting.

Do you have any ideas for stimulating activity in Music Comps? Any changes we could make to make them more fun/appealing/accessible?

Maybe increase the time/deadline of a music comp more than the other comps, so people are able to submit music without being rushed to do it.

I agree with @Ostrich - of all the competitions we do, I think Music Comps benefit the most from having a generous deadline.

It might be worth polling this, to see if there are even enough people that *might* even be interested in doing a music competition. I'm not sure how many active users even create music afterall.

The main problem, as Thunderbro said, is that there are few members who are active composers/musicians. I, being the one who hosted the previous competition, tried to revive Music Competitions after the winner of the previous one didn't post a new one for a good amount a time. The thread of the previous Music Comp can be found here, where Vitiman also brings up the point that the lack of active musicians led to there being no entries (except mine, which can be found in that thread).

I think music competitions can only work if there is a decent amount of active members who make music to begin with. I don't see a lot of people learning how to make music just to partake in a competition because, as you said, it's much harder to learn how to make music than it is to pick up a pencil and draw. I agree with Thunderbro on polling this since it might not be worth having music competitions regularly anymore.

I think competitions in general need to feel like more of a big deal on here. Right now they seem only slightly more important than a forum game, which I think is part of the reason why involvement is so low in most competitions. Perhaps if there was some way to present them as more of a grand affair we would see a rise in participation.

One idea on my mind is some sort of Hall of Fame where we display the top 3 entries from each competition so people can view/play/listen to/etc. them. We can also make this a prominent link on the main site. This could both introduce main site members to the forums through our competitions and incentivize people to participate, since if they land in the top 3 their entries will not just be forgotten having only been seen by active forum members at the time. This will make winners feel more like a part of MFGG's history, and everybody likes to feel important!

I was thinking of making a music comp. that's limited to one specific tool (or more if required), as in my case, I'm curious to see what covers/creations MFGGers can make in BeepBox, a chiptune tool I find quite interesting. Otherwise I don't know what else to contribute to rebooting music comps.
