LumaSMS Community Effort - HylianDev - 01-17-2019

So as you guys know, I've been working on the new MFGG mainsite software for a while. As it's not my day job, and it's hard to find time, progress has been slow. There have been periods of boom, usually followed by long periods of bust.

I'm intending today to lay out a plan for finishing it, and that plan includes help from the community on things I'm less capable of doing, like designing a good layout, and perhaps designing a good frontend mockup that covers all the bases.

I know we've been down this road before lol, and in fact I went down it recently in an effort to get this portion done. However, it's really best left to people who are much better than me at this. Kritter did a great design, but I don't have necessary source files for that, and I'd like to poll to see if the community wants to go in a different direction.

So, for the... Nth time, let's brainstorm on a LumaSMS design!

I'm making my own mockup so we can just combine the best aspects of all of them. Keep in mind that it's very WIP and the final version won't be just flat colors. I'm just testing the palette and the layout. (big image!)

Wow I love it Mors!

RE: LumaSMS Community Effort - Q-Nova - 02-13-2019

While I really like the old MFGG site designs, I still think Kritter's design looked rather great.

Mors' design also looks nice, I like the blues. I don't think the red wavy parts at the sides is really necessary, and I'm not so sure about the yellows. I do understand that this is a WIP, though, so I might change my mind once more progress is made.

If there's anything that I think the new MFGG site design should have, it's accessibility, reliability, and personality. It should be easy to use, with navigation never feeling like a claustrophobic nightmare. The site should be very stable and not easy to crash, with as few bugs as possible. Personality doesn't have as much priority as the former two, but I'd really like to see some fun details. I feel like that as long as they aren't ugly or distracting, being in MFGG would feel like a lot more fun with some life in the design. I'm not really a fan of how some sites look today, and while MFGG can have some simplicity in the new design, I don't think it should get to the point of looking boring.

I do think the MFGG site design used in 2006-2018 covers the three points I mentioned nicely, even if it may look a bit outdated today and has a few flaws (the average review scores is sometimes miscalculated and sorting by last update seems to have been broken at some point, to name a couple). I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll all come up with for the new design, though!

This was my pitch for a potential layout for the games page. Really it just shows some of the areas I think you'd need to improve such as breadcrumbs, tags, increasing user focus and making things that are important stick out, while also making the games page easy to read.

I'm not going to develop this thing but I'd be happy to send people any PDF files for graphics I've created. Truthfully though most of that can be done with CSS and everything else is just bodge graphics that I'd be happy if you replaced, I just wanted to focus on areas of improvement but you can take that design and change it all if you like. Mors already reached out to me about a few graphics files on Twitter.

While you're here, do you happen to have the template for the memberbars on our current forum? I'm looking to create a couple more but literally cannot find the blank template anywhere.

Just be aware it's a PDF file with probably unnamed layers and no rhyme or reason.

RE: LumaSMS Community Effort - Mario - 08-14-2020

Hi all,

It looks like recently there was a fork of the oldest version of lumaSMS living out on the web. There's now 4 of them out there! I know, I was surprised too, I only knew of the first two. I was able to merge them all into one PR on the mfgg org one here:

https://github.com/mario-fan-games-galaxy/LumaSMS/pull/42

but there's like 3 different frameworks in use? I don't really have a clue what's going on. I started working with HylianDev at one point to organize the GitHub and created the MFGG org for the project and started working on that one (it has a nice working installer, but not much else I don't believe, haven't looked at it in quite a while!) but he never went back to contribute to it and the discord we had together never had any updates. I was surprised to find he made a new repo for it: https://github.com/hyliandev/lumasms-custom which has all the tscms code in there as well. Neat but it seems totally different from the previous work.

The webhook we had set up on the Discord alerted me to the new fork here off of the original: https://github.com/MorsGames/mfgg3

I'd love to get us off on the right foot developing this project, it seems like there's a lot of chaos here and not much out in the open so I don't know what's going on. I can add anyone appropriate to the MFGG org on GitHub and hand that off and help sort this out for sure.

There's a development discord here as well if we want to do any live discussion about this: https://discord.gg/zsqQEn

unfortunately HylianDev is the owner so I can't add anyone to the Staff group so I made a Staff 2 for anyone on the MFGG side who wants to work on it.
