Looks more like a tech demo than an actual game. The controls are also really really slippery up to the point it's frustrating and not fun. It lacks any type of polish or special effects, and the polish it does have (motion blur) lags the game on every setting, and my PC can handle games on the highest settings. Overall, not good in my opinion, however, don't stop trying, you'll get there if you learn from your mistakes.

RE: Super Mario Prism - 3D Mario Fangame - Vitiman - 03-15-2019

I applaud you for trying to do something different, but there is a significant lack of effort present here. I'll lay out my critiques/thoughts as organized as possible for you - and I suppose anyone else who's interested:
  • The camera AI is pretty much non-existent. The camera follows Mario at a fixed point constantly, and it can be adjusted to be behind/in front of him by hitting Ctrl (or whatever you have that button mapped to). As such, to avoid clipping through walls and other hard objects, the camera just zooms in way too hard into Mario every single time the camera is near a wall, even if it's not in front of you. It's so astonishingly lazy and unpleasant to experience, I can't really explain it. It would give me motion-sickness if I wasn't as affected by that as most people.
  • Mario's animations are running at a much slower speed than they should. This seems like a pretty major oversight, seeing as it makes jumping up and down look really janky and not terribly smooth. It would look a lot better if you sped up his animations a bit - it would help in giving him the illusion of weight. As it stands, Mario appears to defy gravity.
  • Speaking of Mario and physics, what in the world did you do here? You can't make a sharp turn at all, you seem to have zero deceleration, Mario's jump descent is entirely dependent on if you're still holding down jump or not (which seems like it's caused by an attempt to code dynamic jump heights), etc. etc. I cannot begin to stress how unpleasant this is to actually play, except that it's just a step above "unplayable". If you were persistent enough, I suppose none of these issues would bug you, but it's worlds removed from what I would call polished.
  • The presentation is about as bare bones as they come. I know not many people in the Mario fangaming community are musicians, but I will stress this point until it no longer needs stressing: running a MIDI through a soundfont is not rearranging a song. It's lazy and sounds lazy, to boot. I will not mark off major points for that - most people do not care, evidently - but it irked me personally. Your choice in level music was cute (the first area is the SML ending, for instance), but it has absolutely no heart put into it. Hell, you could say that about the entire game: it has no heart put into it.
I would love to see more 3D Mario fangames, but it's 2019 - the novelty of a fangame being 3D is no longer a plus in its favour. We're long past that point, really.

3-D Mario fangames are still fairly rare, and it's always great to see them on MFGG. However, I have to reiterate what other people have said: The game's mechanics need serious work. The game seems to be built around tight, precision platforming - for example, jumping from one moving platform to another, or ground-pounding small switches. However, the game's mechanics are poorly-suited for this design. I've never played a 3-D platformer that's as slippery as this. It's very difficult to stop Mario or change directions once he's moving.

This has the potential to be awesome, but it needs a lot more work. I truly hope you'll consider the feedback we're offering you as you continue improving this.

RE: Super Mario Prism - 3D Mario Fangame - Hello - 03-17-2019

Released a quick update (v1.0.1) to address common complaints.
-Tweaked the physics.
-Sped up some animations
-Fixed some bugs.
-Disabled Unity's axis smoothing on keyboard controls.
-Disabled more special effects on low quality settings.

I've submitted a review for your game. I'm glad you're trying new things, but I think you needed to polish this one a lot more. It's a bit unexpected, considering how polished your previous creations have been. In fact, I even recall some of your games being criticized for focusing too much on polish.

I think you should continue to experiment with 3D, but I'd try something smaller first that you can make look nice and play well, then take steps up until you are ready to tackle something as big as a Mario 64 style game.

RE: Super Mario Prism - 3D Mario Fangame - Hello - 03-24-2019

Released another update (v1.0.2) with more fixes.
-Tweaked the physics. (Definitely not slippery)
-Fixed some bugs.
-Added some normal maps that were missing.

Sometimes I'm not sure if Hello is human or not

RE: Super Mario Prism - 3D Mario Fangame - Hello - 04-23-2019

Released another update (v1.0.3) with more fixes.
-Mouse camera controls.
-Physics tweaks.
-Bug fixes.

This will be the final update for Super Mario Prism. The rest of the physics improvements would break this game's level design if I included them, so I will release the updated physics in a separate new game with new levels later on.

Are, are you serious? You're seriously not changing the level design in order to accommodate the better physics improvements!? This is screaming bad game design right here.

RE: Super Mario Prism - 3D Mario Fangame - TawPawNaw - 04-24-2019

Look, I suppose this is Hello's first 3D game, and like all first fangames, it is hella bad. However, I do hope Hello keeps going on and proceeds to create a new, more fun game.

Unrelated, who thinks we will see hello make 3D Mario Editor?

The game is done though, and it's a much better idea to move on to a new game than to redesign all the levels from scratch.

To be honest this game is beyond saving too, but I appreciate small updates like that nonetheless.

starting on a new game is a much more effective use of time than redesigning levels in an old one

Give the man a break. This is Hello's 1st 3-D game. You can't get it right all the time.
