Here are some tips for SMM spriting. The SMM free makes
Tip #1 Three colors

Never break the three color rule in NES styles! However there are some ways to avoid that. Sprites could be made by tiles to build up into on sprite. The background could sometimes make a sprite look like it has four colors, such as black and white background back in games like ''Donkey kong'' and ''Mario bros''. In SMM some sprites freely use so much colors.
Tip #2 Gridset boxes

Gridset boxes could help label some sprites. As you can see in the image, every alt color in the ''Alt colors box'' are used to mark sprites as alts, except for that first color in the first row. Use that first color to mark the sprite as the main/default. And for the Etc colors, they all are used to mark sprites anything they are meant for. I'll explain what they do in order.
-The first color is a grey color that is used to mark sprites as unused.
-The second color is a dark green color that is used to mark sprites best/recommended to use.
-The third color is a dark grey color that is used to mark sprites as beta/early.
-The fourth color is a very bright purple that is used to mark sprites as bonus, which so far it has never been used on any SMM sheet.
-A new color (The fifth color) is a very bright blue dark-ish color that could be used to mark sprites fixed.
