Video game songs inspired by non-video game songs? - Q-Nova - 05-31-2019

Video game music is pretty good, I must say! I've heard original songs, songs that are remixes of other video game songs, and songs that are directly taken from something that isn't a video game (like an album or a movie), but what about video game songs inspired by non-video game songs? I think they can be rather interesting. I can only think of one at the moment, though, which is Mars, the Bringer or War, from the final level of Keen 5:

It's based on the song of the same name, written by Gustav Holst:

What about you? Do you know any game music inspired by non-game music? (Songs that are directly taken from non-game sources don't count, by the way.)

An interesting topic! You've probably noticed that the SMB3 airship music also resembles the song you linked.

On a similar note, Saria's Song in Zelda 64 takes a bit of inspiration from the Jupiter theme from The Planets.

I can think of a bunch of examples from DKC2, which remains one of my favorite game soundtracks:
  • Haunted Chase is pretty obviously inspired by The Night on Bald Mountain
  • In A Snow-Bound Land is inspired by Antarctica from Vangelis
  • The drumbeat in Bayou Boogie is basically the same drumbeat in "In the Air Tonight" from Phil Collins
  • Some people think Stickerbrush Symphony takes some cues from "I Will Remember You" from Amy Grant
  • The game's theme song resembles March of the Kings (always high on the list of underappreciated Christmas carols!)

There are several known examples I can remember at the moment:
- Mega Man Elec Man stage: Journey - Faithfully
- Earthbound Skyrunner: The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
- Earthbound Hippie Battle Theme: Chuck Berry - Johnny B Goode
