Screensavers - Q-Nova - 06-14-2019

If you used a computer with a CRT, you are very likely to know what are screensavers. When you leave your computer alone for a while, an animation will play on the monitor to prevent screen burning. In an age where most use LCDs, screensavers started to seem redundant. I still like them, though. My Windows 7 computer couldn't do screensavers for a very long time, but I was messing with the settings about a year ago, and BOOM! I got my own screensaver for my computer, which is a slideshow of level maps from various Commander Keen mods.

Do you still use screensavers? If so, what screensaver are you currently using?

I don't have them on my current devices but my favorite screensaver I had when I was a little kid was a compilation of pictures of my dog. In middle school on our computers in the labs we weren't allowed to upload photos for our screensavers so I always chose one that had a cube bouncing around the screen that'd turn into a ball and a spiked shape if I remember correctly.

Oh yeah, screensavers! I remember the era when everybody had them. They were lots of fun - I remember I had the Windows 98 underwater screensaver for a long time.

Nowadays I'm boring, though - when I'm away from the PC, I lock my screen and let the system go into power-saving mode.

:)

The permanent pokeball on my phone screen takes issue with the idea that burn-in was only a CRT issue.

RE: Screensavers - Q-Nova - 06-15-2019

I remember having the 3D Pipes screensaver before, although I'm not sure if it was my computer or someone else's. I also remember having my Windows 7 computer set to the Ribbons screensaver for a very long time, although it sometimes didn't work because of how I had my computer set up.

@Mors Oh hey, I remember seeing that in Yoshi vs. Windows and Wario vs. Windows! I always thought it was a game! Huh? In fact, while I was watching that screensaver, I thought you could play with it at first. Whoops!

@Retriever II Huh, that's interesting. Looks like I was tricked!

I used to have a screensaver with flying toast and toasters. I forget what it was called.

Currently, I'm using 'Ribbons' as a screensaver. I really miss those creative screensavers you could buy or download back in the day, such as After Dark and many others. Now most of them are riddled with viruses and fallen into history and/or obscurity.

OLED displays suffer from burn in too. I can see the notification bar stuff, Discord's toolbar icons, and the keyboard keys very faintly on my phone's display when I have a flat colored background.

I've heard about plasma TVs having a burn-in issue as well, but I never experienced it myself.

I found a page with a zip file that includes the Windows 98 screensavers (plus a few ones that may or may not be from Windows 98 -- I don't know)!

https://www.pconlife.com/how-to-add-classic-windows-98-screen-saver-to-windows-7-8-10/

I tested them on Windows 7 and 10 and they work surprisingly well! Only issues are that 3D Maze (unfortunately) doesn't display the walls correctly and in Windows 10, there's at least one screensaver that won't load (I think it's the Time one). I'm currently using 3D Pipes!
