get rid of warn points - mit - 12-06-2017

i dunno if this is standard for forums or not but i don't like the warn points system at all. it seems extremely arbitrary and more trouble than its worth

the alternative being either a. strike based or b. warn/mute/ban. if the only weight that moderators hold are hinged in the warning system, then it's hard to say they hold any weight at all. imo all you'd really need is to have a verbal warning, if this is ignored then you prevent them from posting (but not visiting the boards), then if when that's lifted they continue to act out of line, ban.

if nothing else, it's hard to follow- you're giving different rules different priorities which can work for some but absolutely not all. it's a lot easier to, again, simply say "stop doing this" as a literal warning and if they don't listen and the moderator isn't acting out of line then you should be good to drop some form of punishment

The warn system comes standard with MyBB, although there are plugins you can install to modify it, and admins who don't want to use it don't have to use it.

The new warn system is much more similar to a strike-based system, since the warn points scale is much smaller (0-10).

It's very rare that people accumulate enough warn points to get suspended - that's only happened a handful of times since The Split. The warn system isn't particularly complicated, but if you're having trouble understanding it, I'd recommend not doing things that might get you warned. It's hard to get banned on MFGG, and in the post-Split era, the only people who maxed out their warn points were frequently and willfully breaking the rules - which would get you banned even if we scrapped the warn system.

Some rules get different priorities because some forms of behavior are more harmful to the community than others. It's the same reason that most societies impose different penalties for murder and jaywalking. In the case of MFGG, some things warrant bigger warnings than others - severe flaming and harassment of other members or posting sexually graphic material is a lot more harmful to the community than bumping old topics without a good reason.
