Pedigree's Fall Life Update - Pedigree - 10-26-2019

Starting college soon! Will be studying to achieve an associate's degree in IT Tech and Support. May also work towards a degree in programming once I've gotten through this program and find game dev classes for my true dream job!

I don't want to work in retail forever! And even if my dream job of game development doesn't pan out, I'll have some realistic and in demand skills!

Wish me luck, it will be an adjustment for me to be both a full time employee and a student!

Well good luck then, pedigree. Were right behind you

(Also isn't pedigree a brand of dog food? I recomend staying away from any dogs.)

Take it from someone who took game dev classes in college: they are absolutely not worth your time or money.

I'm happy you're pursuing your dreams and working towards your goals. I wanna point out that you can also learn programming little by little in-between life/classes as well. That's how I started

Good luck : )

Some of the better coding bootcamps can be a good value (vs going through the time and expense for a full college degree) if you have the chops to keep ahead in them. We've hired 3 developers from Fullstack Academy and they've all worked out quite well. Professional networking plays a big roll however.

It you want to be an indie dev, that is.

im gonna go with this, and what vert said

i dont have a degree but i can code, and its served me well. vinny's expressed some concerns to me that there might be places i cant get to without a degree (high management type stuff: hopefully he comes in and elaborates) but honestly a code bootcamp or similar is going to do you far better.

i might go out on a limb and say gamedev school is a scam. some people apparently get hired and i guess you can learn other gamedev-related stuff there like level design? idk? but if you want to learn to code, do not go to gamedev school

Pretty much. I ended up having to do classes that either taught me absolutely nothing or had nothing to do with game dev. What the hell does a game dev need a class on cultural differences for?

Good luck, chap.

@Pedigree Good luck!

@HylianDev You don't need a bachelor's degree to get your foot in the door in the IT field - if you know your stuff, an associate's degree, or just self-taught coding skills, may be enough to get a good job. You may find that you need a bachelor's or higher if you want to work your way up to a management/project management role, though, especially for bigger companies.
