Or is a tutorial on GML enough? I want to learn GML in order to understand what I need to do to start making the SMB3 enemies that aren't in the Hello Mario Engine.

GML is pretty user-friendly, and you don't need to be a programming wizard to code in GML. However, the more you expand your knowledge of programming, the more things you'll be able to make.

Personally, I learned coding using GML. It's pretty solid for beginners.

as a professional programmer, i'd say learning from a gml tutorial IS learning how to code. it wont make you a master by any means, but it is the first step
