They are getting smarter... - Mors - 06-03-2021

So a while ago I saw a post like this asking for some good fangame recommendations

Looks innocent right? Well, a few days after it was made I've noticed that it was... edited.

I have replaced the links in this example, but they were essentially redirecting to some shady sites. Odd, maybe the account has been hacked? The security here isn't that bad, but it seemed possible to me.

But it gets better, here's one from the thread "Super Mario Bros. 2 questions"

Hope the question makes sense...showbox speed test

Different user, same sites, same old tactic, but they seem to try disguising the links this time. Here's another one

Looking <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->192.168.0.1 back at them now it's more than a little overwhelming. I never had any Nintendo console, so I didn't get the chance to experience the games when they came out. They are classics and I feel like I am missing out big time by not playing them.
I would like to play them on PC if possible, whether through emulation or some other way. in the past I have played platformers on PC with my PS3 controller. I am not opposed to buying a console, but I would rather not, and if I do I don't know wich one would have the Mario games I would enjoy.
Some of my favorite platformers are Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, and Electronic Super Joy. I feel like this is a great place to ask, where should I start with the Mario games? <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->routerlogin

This one has different links this time at least.

We have already been dealing with spambots a lot, banning a few every week, but this is a completely different thing. These are almost certainly posted by actual humans, and they are harder to detect since they are edited right when we stop looking at them.

To help us with both these spam accounts as well as forum moderation in general we have decided to promote @Gate into a Forum Moderator. He would already be the first one to notice new spambots accounts anyways, so this promotion is actually long overdue. Welcome Gatete, goodbye spambots!

I can't help but wonder who would bother to spam a forum on a community where most activity is on the Discord

Spambots be-gone!

He's out to obliterate spam bots for now! Congrats on your promotion, @Gate!

What links should we be looking out for? Like what is malicious and what isn't?

If you see a seemingly innocent post edited to include random links (like in those examples I posted) that's with 100% certainty "spam". That being said, I checked the links with Despair and they all seem weirdly harmless? Like it seems like the goal is to trick search engine algorithms to create false connections between their websites and certain phrases, so that they can get more ad revenue. So clicking those links probably won't nuke your computer, but the key word here is "probably".

I think i another way to tell if they are spambots is there usernames because they are seemingly real-life names for people but with no space between the first and second name.

Congratulations @Gate! You've been one of the most consistent MFGGers for a really long time, and I know you'll do a fine job squashing these spammers, in addition to all the other things you do.

@TheOrangeToad Yeah, spambot usernames frequently fall into certain patterns - for example, sometimes they'll start with a normal first name, followed by either a normal last name or a bit of gibberish.

@Mors I wish here was an easy way to deal with spammers like these. Sadly, captchas and verification questions don't work well when there's a human behind the wheel.
