All the Creeps of the Cosmos: demo 1 - Alexandra - 08-24-2023

Hello! It's been a few years a little while since last time I was active on here, but in the past year or so I've been getting back into game development again. One project is an untitled, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga-inspired RPG about a group of mage kids, which I work on in my free time, and which as a result progresses pretty slowly... and the other is a visual novel I'm the character designer & character artist for, which had its first demo released just the other day! Introducing...

All the Creeps of the Cosmos is a two-part indie visual novel, partially set in the 1950s, and partially in the distant future. Demo 1 contains chapter 1 of Side Future, where humanity suffocates under its alien overlords, the Creeps. Salamander is an underground resistance fighter who, like her comrades, gained strange powers after experiencing the mysterious "Hatching" phenomenon. As she fights to free the surface, what will she discover about her friends, her enemies, and herself? On the opposite side of the conflict, an agent of Keys, the enforcers of tradition, fights to climb the ranks of power. But where will he turn to when his purpose is shaken?

While the full game is 70K words, the demo is 4K words long and only takes about 20-30 minutes. You can download it from Itch.io and play on Windows, MacOS, and Linux (incl Steam Deck), where you can also read more about it and check out our dev logs. Take a look, and feel free to leave a comment after you've played it to let us know what you think! You don't need an Itch.io account to download it, but if you want to comment without making an account, I'll pass along any replies to this thread to the writers.

That's it for this time, but I'll be back with more updates as the development continues!

I don't have a lot of experience with VNs, but this looks cool! What tool did you use to make it?

Also, welcome back to MFGG!

Thank you! I'm personally only responsible for the character designs, sprites and some other visuals-related stuff, but we're using Ren'py, which is an engine specifically made for developing VNs (although versatile enough that you can also make some other stuff). Apparently it's quite easy to use, so it's accessible even for people who don't have a lot of experience with programming.

I'll also take the opportunity to say that we (that's me and my friends Crystal and Sadie) just released v1.2 of the demo, which makes the small-but-impactful change of replacing the font with a new and more readable one:

Not only makes the reading experience more comfortable, but also makes it much more legible on smaller screens:

Exciting stuff!
