Minigame Competition - Sneaking - WasabiCatto - 10-15-2023

As your new forum administrator, I wanna bring back the weekly competitions we had on the MFGG early days. And I'm beginning with a brand new minigame competition.

The theme for this competition is SNEAKING

You have to do a minigame in which you have to sneak through it without getting detected

Here's some rules:

- You may not submit works created before the creation of this topic.
- You may use any program to create the game
- You may use existing code

Competition will begin November 7th and you'll have until December 1st to finish your entry

I think this contest needs to be promoted heavily so more people can join into the fun.

Excited to see how this goes..

RE: Minigame Competition - Halloween - Roo - 10-15-2023

I have to ask; why is there a rule against not being able to use "existing open-source frameworks"? What purpose does that serve? It's not like this is a contest of coding skill; if you download some 3D platformer template, haphazardly slap some platforms around, cover them in poorly-resized textures, and play some 32kbps Mario music on top of that, you're probably not going to win. And not only that, but what does the rule even mean? Like, does it mean I'm allowed to use the default Clickteam platform movement since that's closed-source (I think), but I'm not allowed to use a custom engine someone else made? What kind of sense does that make?

All the rule is doing is wasting people's time. I'd much rather use a solution that already exists and build some interesting gameplay loops/levels/gimmicks/whatever around it than spend half the contest time copy-pasting code from a YouTube tutorial (or does that count as "using existing open-source frameworks" too?).

What I meant is use for example a existing Mario engine for the entry

That doesn't answer my question: Why?

RE: Minigame Competition - Halloween - VinnyVideo - 10-15-2023

Hmm... I don't think anyone is going to care (or even notice) if you use a simple platform template that takes care of basic features (running, jumping, and so forth) - just as nobody's going to complain if you copy a bit of code you found online for, say, your textbox engine. I don't know if Minigame Competitions/Game Jams are the place for things like Gatete's or Hello's engines - though even then, that rule might be a holdover from the days when MFGG got a lot of hastily-assembled engine edits.

@OssieTheOstrich Agreed! This deserves some Twitter hype and a shoutout on the mainsite.

RE: Minigame Competition - Halloween - WasabiCatto - 10-15-2023

Removed the framework rule

RE: Minigame Competition - Halloween - Roo - 10-15-2023

Thanks.

Now I should probably actually make a game.

RE: Minigame Competition - Halloween - ReinlynxPSI - 10-18-2023

Wish I could join, but I'm going to be busy with other projects next week. Oh well, I'll try and check out what everyone has to offer!

RE: Minigame Competition - ??? - Roo - 10-19-2023

I appreciate the shifted dates because I somehow managed to completely corrupt my project and have to restart anyway.

RE: Minigame Competition - ??? - WasabiCatto - 10-19-2023

As I announced on the Discord, I have postponed this minigame competition as soon NCFC 2023 ends.

You are free to suggest me a theme for the competition via Discord

RE: Minigame Competition - ??? - OssieTheOstrich - 10-26-2023

Hopefully whatever theme is chosen it'll be a neat one.

RE: Minigame Competition - ??? - WasabiCatto - 11-07-2023

Minigame competition is now up and running!

RE: Minigame Competition - Sneaking - Roo - 11-07-2023

It's everyone's favorite Popple, Popple!

RE: Minigame Competition - Sneaking - Roo - 11-08-2023

Popple sadly can't afford a "holding item" animation (which is exactly why he's breaking into mansions to steal ugly bowls), but at least the moon is right.

RE: Minigame Competition - Sneaking - Roo - 11-09-2023

A game about Popple wouldn't be complete without a grapple(ing hook).

(and no, I don't know why it's so compressed)

RE: Minigame Competition - Sneaking - VinnyVideo - 11-18-2023

Roo's game looks really cool! The world needs more Popple games.

I really want to make something for this. But I also feel really lazy, so I might not.

I have an idea, but I'm not sure how to turn it into an interesting game. (Shoot me a PM or a Discord message if you want to hear more.)

RE: Minigame Competition - Sneaking - WasabiCatto - 11-18-2023

Two days remaining to submit your entries, I might extend this if needed

RE: Minigame Competition - Sneaking - ~DodonArgustius~ - 11-18-2023

Hopefully I'll manage to finish mine in time. Very basic premise and gameplay, hope I'll be able to make up for it with the mechanics.

Do you have the wrong date on the OP? I'm pretty sure November 21st isn't a week away.
