What-if idea: Sonic Legends inspired Mario fangame - OssieTheOstrich - 10-19-2023

For those not in the know, Sonic Legends is a currently upcoming and in development community fangame which has the main goal of updating and re-inventing over 20 years of history within the Sonic fangaming scene in style similar to that of what Sonic Mania did for offical classic zones.

It's a really promising and fun looking project that I'm really hyped to see come to frution, which got me thinking..

..What-If there was a simillar project, but for the Super Mario fangaming scene?

As far as I know, there are only two examples of such projects (or at least, projects close to this idea); those being Super Mario Attack of the Fangamers (which was created by Pickleboy and apparently had a level based on Miraculous Boss Battles) and P-Switch Predictiment (created by @Vitiman, though it was more of a joke game than a serious attempt at this idea).

I mean, it might be nice milestone/anniversary celebration of MFGG if it were to be a actual project; Imagine it, levels based on the best (and possibly worst) Mario fangames for the past many years, now playable in one whole cohesive game..

It should be like Sonic Adventure 2 and have Hero and Dark story modes, one created with a Clickteam product and one with Game Maker (I'll leave it up to you decide which is which). After you beat both, you unlock the Final story which would be made with... uh... I dunno, Scratch?

Ha, sounds fun! I would play it.

Honestly, that would be awesome and I'd be down for it myself! never knew of Sonic Legends until now but that's a really cool idea, and I agree it would be cool too if we had one for Mario fangames too! Agree

So, it seems there is an interest in this idea. Good!

Now, considering Sonic Legends is going to use an artstyle like Mania's (though a bit more detailed and expressive), what artstyle would this hypothetical Mario fangame use?

Mania itself was designed with the theme of a "lost Sega Saturn Sonic game", which would probably not work for a Mario game.

On another note, @Roo I feel like your idea falls in line with a joke game idea rather than a more serious game one.

I'd also like to mention that I haven't committed to anything regarding this project since I already have a lot on my plate.

A bit of a double post but @KrystalPhantasm and I were experimenting with a possible art styles for this hypothetical idea.
The styles we tried ranged from SMB3 All-Stars, SMW (but a bit Mania-ified*), Sonic Mania**, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

*like that one contest entry by @SilverVortex years back)
**like that one test sprites @Mors once did years back

Now, I know at the moment it's all just art style tests of Mario but this got me thinking; What exact levels from what fangames this hypothetical idea have? And probably more importantly, what engine will it be in? (Krystal suggested one of @Gate's engines)

And finally, who'd be the artists, programmers, and other related crew on this? I'm not planning on making this myself, I'm just throwing the idea out for people to get interested in..

With that said, I wonder if this could possibly become a community fangame (I think it's been a while since this site did one of those)..

As for the sprites, I think OssieTheOstrich's style might work better in a more conventional Mario platformer. His Mario looks friendly and goofy.

I think KrystalPhantasm's style would do a great job of showing movement of Mario's hands, which could work great if there's a bigger emphasis on punching. KrystalPhantasm's Mario looks a little faster and has more attitude.

@Gate's engine would be an excellent choice for a collaborative project. It has tons of features, and the developer is obviously still active, which is nice. Also, Gate's engine uses GM, which most people are familiar with. While Gate's latest engine requires GM Studio 2, it's free to get started with it, which is another big plus.

Also, if y'all are serious about making a collaborative project, I'd be more than happy to contribute a level or two.

Granted, at the moment I'm just throwing out ideas of a possible artstyle for this, I don't really have the time nor energy to program for this hypothetical project (i have a lot of stuff on my plate already).

That said, whoever decides to actually jumpstart this into something playable I'd be happy to provide sprites for it.
