Wrecking Crew? - Saltman - 01-01-2018

Well, I've been playing this game recently (along with WC '98) out of curiosity, because people consider it one of the... worst Mario games, for some reason. I don't really see why people would dislike it that much, but I found out that some of the reasons people consider it bad are bland visuals and... Luigi being pink, apparently?

Anyway, I find the game to be surprisingly good, at least by NES standarts. 100 levels sure is a lot to entertain yourself with and it actually makes me think really hard in some levels. I even found out that it was a launch title along with SMB (and that game only had 32 levels and didn't even have a level editor lol)! I think it'f be cool to see its weird characters more frequently, too, specially Foreman Spike (a.k.a Wario's lost father).

Do you like it yourself despite its reputation though? I think it deserves more respect and that it's a shame it's not considered a classic but instead is overshadowed by the other much shorter NES Mario games Sad

EDIT: Move this to Gaming please.

Honestly, I don’t consider it bad, but it isn’t great either

RE: Wrecking Crew? - VinnyVideo - 01-01-2018

Yeah, this should live in Gaming. I moved it.

Until today, I'd never actually played Wrecking Crew before. I only played it briefly, though. It's an interesting concept, and it would be nice if more Mario games referenced it. A remake/spiritual sequel would also be neat to see.

I liked Wrecking Crew '98. It's cathartic.

Recently someone released a full translation patch over on ROMHacking.net. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/3214/

Why would they release a SNES game in 1998?

Nintendo stopped selling SNES games internationally in 1997. That's why it wasn't released overseas.

Another good example of this would be Rockman and Forte (Mega Man and Bass) which also came out the same year and didn't get released outside Japan.

Thanks for sharing this. Now I can understand what's going on in the story!

I'd love to see a sequel that gets released outside of Japan and doesn't have "'98" in its title! That's been a while.

Good question. Nintendo actually released one Super NES game, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, at the end of 1999. It seems odd that Nintendo of Japan was still releasing Super NES games deep into the Nintendo 64's lifecycle. I think Nintendo still viewed the SNES as a good vehicle for 2-D games, while focusing 3-D efforts on the N64. They also had things like the Satellaview that helped extend the life of the Super Famicom.

That's actually a good angle and makes sense. The SNES could've lived on that way. But alas, people will always choose 3D over 2D.

For some reason my emulated version of wrecking crew is a little glitched because when i break something the game thought i won, when i did not.

you're playing on an emulator that's either bad/not configurated correctly to play your ROM or simply the ROM is bad and doesn't work.

RE: Wrecking Crew? - OssieTheOstrich - 02-11-2018

It's FCEUX.

Oh wait! Maaaaaybe you're missing a wall or something in the game. Because everything is grey in it you probably aren't noticing a few camuflaged walls or breakable objects that act like walls but don't look like walls at all.

I also found myself confused the first time but I eventually figured it out.

RE: Wrecking Crew? - OssieTheOstrich - 02-11-2018

Nope it looks normal.

Then maybe you just destroyed every wall and won that way without even knowing it.

You win this game by destroying all the walls.

RE: Wrecking Crew? - OssieTheOstrich - 02-12-2018

No i destroyed one wall then for some reason the game thought i won?!

You probably destroyed the wall wthout noticing it was the only one/last one.

How about you show a screenshot or something? I really don't know what to say...
