Part of me is surprised Microsoft didn't do this sooner, considering that Microsoft stopped caring about Skype quite a few years ago.

Skype was one of my main ways of chatting with friends (both MFGG friends and sometimes real-life friends) from 2013 to 2018. I remember some of those unofficial MFGG Skype groups were crazy active! Unfortunately, Skype kept getting worse as the years went on, and it's not a surprise that other platforms (like Discord) quickly overtook Skype.

Skype has been kinda dead since Skype 7 was replaced with Skype 8.
It was a huge downgrade in quality and despite the various surveys nothing ever improved or changed.

I was too young for Skype, I just thought it was a video call app with blurry video.

I had Skype from 2004 to talk to MFGGers on.
It's a pity that now that space is now gone. So many memories...

I do gotta admit, while Skype is now a piece of history, it did had a charm of casually chatting with your online friends back then no matter the distance. But yeah after several updates back then, Skype became much more difficult to use fluently, even when having a very strong or powerful PC. Now it's close of getting shut down, which is fine, we do have other social websites or apps to use like Discord as mentioned before... Zoom which literally overtook Skype as well when the pandemic appeared at 2020... now, Skype is getting replaced with Microsoft Teams which, I haven't even used Teams much at all from my end, however I do know some users using Teams, since it's also like used for business like school and such to go for.
