General Sprite and Pixel Art Discussion - NowhereMan - 08-17-2025

Hello everybody, I am making sprites, pixel art, I just want to make quality art. Seeing your art makes me think you all (for the most part) are highly skilled in this sort of thing. What programs do you (in this current time, as I used to use Paint, etc.) to make sprites and pixel art? What are free programs that you use, what are paid programs that you use? And have you used Aseprite and do you recommend it? Any info you can give me would be awesome! Thank you.

I tried using Aseprite multiple times but didn't like it. I ought to try it again sometime.

Back when I still worked on Super Mario World hacks I used YY-CHR as it was an easy to use sprite editor that worked with basically any kind of old hardware, and using MS Paint XP outside of that. When I started making pixel art for my commercial pixel art game I initially used Paint again but it wasn't working for me, so I ended up just making all the pixel art on actual SNES hardware using YY-CHR and Lunar Magic. It went pretty well, I think. Really taught me a lot, especially to appreciate the limitations older artists had to deal with.

I do most of my spriting in Paint.NET. It's free.

I am not a very good spriter, so I am not a very good source of advice on this topic.

Seconding Vinny here. I also use Paint.NET for nearly everything.
I think if you're going to be really serious about it Aseprite is worth sinking your teeth into though.

But in the end, every tool is fine. Chaoxys is a very professional sprite artist and uses XP Paint with a laptop Trackpoint if I remember correctly.

I tried using Warioware DIY once. I wouldn't recommend unless you're planning using the sprite as part of a microgame.

Any advice on walking Sprites? Can any body give me good examples of a sprite sheet with good walking/running animations?
