Do you like SMBW? - 2DDGAMES - 12-16-2025

I have to admit I was inspired of Saltman on his forum "Do you like NSMB2?", but I did it because some people say it´s the return of the essence of Mario, while others say it´s garbage. But I´d like to know MFGG´s opinion.
For me, I like SMBW because is beautiful, both visuals and music, and I like the powerups and the levels (special of the world 4, the dessert world), I like the desings of this and the talking flowers (but I thouhgt there more than I remember), but god, the special levels, this is the hell, especially for me the special levels of world 2 and petal islands, I took 1 year to complete the world 2 special level... but this is a good thing, because is more exiting when you complete it.
But, for the rest, I like SMBW... You too?

I see your answer! Big Grin

Interesting question!

I have yet to see anyone really call SMBW garbage. At worst, people say it's just more of the NSMB series, which I can kind of see.

Personally? I liked it. But it's definitely not up there with the classics. It's more like NSMB with a gimmick thrown on top, but it managed to feel fresh due to its creativity in the visual and gameplay department. The overworld was a cool new concept, but I wish there had been more secrets to explore.

World 4 definitely remains a highlight. The desert was extremely cool.

I remember when SMBW was unveiled I was disappointed they hadn't gone full 2.5D like the DKC games, but I think it worked out well for this game. Still, it's something I'd like to see them try in the future.

I also remember Miyamoto saying that after SMW he thought he had fully explored what Mario could be in 2D, and I think he was right. I haven't seen any 2D Mario so far really move the formula forwards. SMBW didn't do that either, but I guess it didn't need to. It at least felt fresh, and it was a good time all around.

I've only spent five minutes playing it, so I'm not in a position to give a fair critique. I'd probably enjoy SMB Wonder if I really played it, though.

I liked Wonder, but it's flawed. It's clear they were actually trying with the art style, level design and world map this time around as opposed to NSMB, which fell into a stagnant rut right after Wii due to the samey artstyle (which also affected Mario spinoffs around this time much to everyone's displeasure) and strict four step level design (do *you* remember the difference between the bullet bill levels of Wii, 2 and U?). In that sense Wonder does feel like the fresh new installment the franchise needed as it felt they were actually trying new things with the aspects I mentioned before, at least some of those being inspired by Maker, which at least make it an interesting game. And while I'm a bit mixed on the Wonder Flower, as it basically replaces most setpieces levels would normally have and its inclusion makes for some weird level structure at times, I think it's an overall success for the game, though I don't think I'd want it to return.

That said, the soundtrack was kinda forgettable, the bosses are not worth talking about even for 2D Mario standards and it really could've used more secret exits all through out the game rather than front-loading them.

When I played Wonder I was burnt out from playing Mario Maker for years, so to me it just felt overall ok.

posted a message yesterday and when I came back there were already 4 comments!! I didn't expect this forum to find out about it so quickly.
