Your favorite video game franchises (besides Mario) - Louis Paul - 01-29-2026

As we played various games on consoles and computers over the years, we get an idea of what games to like and dislike. The Mario franchise is one of most well-known and loved, but it isn't the only franchise to explore.

For me, besides Mario, I love the Plants vs. Zombies franchise, mainly because it's a different format of tower defense, replayability is very strong, there's multiple ways to beat a level, and it's mod-friendly. I played both the PVZ1 and PVZ2 (I didn't have the opportunity to play the PVZ Adventures).

Another franchise that I love is the Bomberman franchise, the battle mode is the main factor, it's a great opportunity to play with a friend because of the simplicity of game mechanics. The arcade ones are fun to play but they are more obscure compared to the console ones.

So, besides Mario, what are your favorite video game franchises?

Super Mario Bros. All-Stars, that must be the definitive game of my childhood. So basically classic Mario, if we're speaking Mario. My engulfing of the 3D Mario world is not complete, but I would like to make it so. I mean, I can talk about games I love, Kirby's Dreamland, Link's Awakening, but I dont have a good full overview of those series themselves.

Nintendo, I love Bubble Bobble on the NES. SMB1. SMB2. SM3. On the SNES, I had a lot more games. Soul Blazer, Donkey Kong Country, Aladdin, Super Mario World (of course!), and some others. I like RPG games. I also like platformers.

Not sure in these forums, regulating Nintendo material, necessarily first person shooters, but I do. I like Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Call of Duty (although I am *not obsessed with this series), PS2 shooters, even the classic 007 game on the N64. While I have played the N64 a lot, surprisingly this was a console I never owned myself.

I am enjoying a bunch of Steam games right now,  there's this game I like specifically and recently called Garage: Bad Trip, a top down shooter, I like those games too.

I have fond memories of PC games from windows computers 90s/2000s like Spider-Man Cartoon Maker (not the best tho) and Lego Island and the click and point games, where you click on stuff and it sings and animated or talks.

I enjoy multiplayer shooters too, like the 007 game, and the Halo games, etc.

Kingdom Hearts, assuming I would like the 3D Final Fantasy games. There was this game I remember from back in the day called Hotel Dusk, also the Phoenix Wright series, those are like visual novels.

I also did enjoy Rock Band, etc. The Elder Scrolls series, I love. I recently been playing the Definitive Series of the GTA games too. I also just like basic online Poker, to be honest.

So I don't really have a *loyalty* to videogame mascots, per se, I just enjoy the art of the videogame. Smile

Besides Mario, I'd say Donkey Kong Country and Zelda. Also, Fire Emblem and classic Final Fantasy.

Hotel Dusk mentioned!  Agree Other than Mario, there are a few franchises that I'm into. Not as deep as Mario, but they are Final Fantasy, Mother, Rhythm Heaven... That's about all I can think of right now. I used to be into Zelda, but I'm really burnt out after playing so many games.

Sonic the Hedgehog, of course!

Not sure if we're talking about video games exclusively, but Sonic remains a top spot regardless.
While certainly not every game is a winner, it houses some of my favorite videogames of all time. And if we consider the media outside videogames as well, there's a lot to like with the TV shows and movies as well.

I also really like Donkey Kong Country and Splatoon.

I'm not much of a fan of Sonic (except listening for the music), I guess the reason was because I grew up with a Super Nintendo that my older brother had (which was my first contact with Mario), also it's harder to design Sonic levels than Mario levels.

Another game franchise that I liked to play back then on my PC was the Angry Birds series, I spent hours and hours on it to get the three stars on every level and to find the golden eggs.
