About the Mario game that I plan to make, which will teach me - Videogamejunkie443 - 10-14-2026

I've mentioned it elsewhere, but now I'm doing it here. The game is called Super Mario: An Adventure of Many. It will include not only content from official Mario games, but also fan-made content. It will include power-ups, enemies, bosses, and other elements from Mario hacks and fan games, plus some animations.

It is planned to be a celebration of Mario and his fans.

This is what I'm going to do to learn how to make my project.

It's cool that you've decided to make a Mario fangame!

Your current description is rather vague and could describe almost any other Mario fangame. Could you share a little more about your game? Are you making it in GM, Clickteam, Godot, Unity, or something else? Is it a platformer or a different genre? What makes your game special?

I'll be making it in GameMaker with my modified Hello Mario Engine for Game Maker Studio 1.4. I say that nonchalantly as if this site is fond of the Hello Engine.

I've seen very people complaining about the use of the Hello Engine in the past decade or so.

Around 2010, the Hello Engine was very popular and beginner-friendly - which resulted in a lot of people using it to churn out uncreative games with poorly-designed levels. This also meant the Hello Engine was a frequent target of criticism on MFGG. It didn't help that the Hello Engine 3 had weird physics and was poorly-optimized and hard to customize. Hello made some improvements to his engine in the ensuing years, but the Hello Engine scene died pretty much the instant Mario Maker came out.

That said, if you're looking for a GM-friendly engine with a lot of features, Gate's engine is better.

I would switch to Anniversary Edition right now, but:

1. There's an input issue

2. I've already put so much into my Hello modification and

3. There are practically no graphics I would have to change to make it look like All-Stars SMB3/SMA4/SMW in the Hello Engine. Anniversary Edition has a lot, and it would take probably a week and a half more than AE to give Gatete Mario Engine 9 that look.

4. I know it's a problem for some, but I like the fact that HME has bosses.
