I... THINK I took those out, the image itself is just flat red when I check it. I took it out because people complained about the readability of text on a textured backgrounds. I can put the red lines back though, depends what people think looks better. I liked it but I don't want readability to suffer.

just a note, you can do all the stripes stuff with CSS and it will save on load times a tonne

Design pointer: don't make the numbers at the top-left of the messages & notification icon red unless there's actually something to check.
