Ever wondered why Donkey Kong is called like that??

Because Donkey...

...the MONKEY!

Huh?

How comes nobody has ever noticed this before?!

RE: I GET IT NOW! - Evil Yoshi Toes - 01-24-2018

It means he's a donkey monkey, or a stubborn monkey I guess? That's usually the trait associated with donkeys, and as his design looks purely ape and not at all donkey, I assume it has to do with his personality. Or it could mean he's an ass.

He's called Donkey Kong because Miyamoto thought Donkey meant something along the lines of "stupid" in English.

Are there really any moments in which DK was a true ass? I've always seen him as being a nice kong.

I thought it was translation goofiness.

According to the bad auto translation:

Quote: I was thinking that Cong was gorilla long ago. Therefore, I wanted to name the ○ ○ Kong. So, I wanted to make a manuka anyway, so I tried to examine Manuka in English dictionary. Then, the word "donkey" which represents a donkey also had the meaning of manuke. So I named it Donkey Kong, but when I brought it to America, I was told that "such a name is strange, there is no point in managing donkeys." But I left it as "Well, good?" (Laugh). Despite such circumstances, it is popular all over the country now, is not it? It is funny that the habit is strong, so you can remember that way, surely, surely.

I looked into what manuke means and I found that it means stupid, but correct me if I'm mistaken. So it seems the name, as Snessy the Duck said, just means "stupid monkey," even though it sounds silly to English speakers.

Stupid monkey, would've never figured that. He was pretty stupid in his first appearance. Steal princesses from an Italian carpenter, shame on you Ass Kong.
