A slightly modified NES zapper - The Shadow - 02-01-2018 ![]() So, unfortunately the cord for this thing got severed at some point. (What a bummer! I loved this thing) After a little bit of thinking, (About 5 minutes) I decided to take advantage of this to see if I could set up an interchangeable cable system. Simple enough concept: Ethernet couplers, and a cat5e cable. The end result was actually a better success than I had expected. It works exactly as it should, plus I can interchange the cable for something longer if I wanted. (I also have an additional cat5e cable if I need one) This was a simple modification. only requiring an ethernet coupler (Broken in half) some electrical tape, and some shrink tubing. RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - Saltman - 02-01-2018 Wow, an NES Zapper! I thought those things didn't like to work in some games though. Does it work with Duck Hunt at least? RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - The Shadow - 02-01-2018 Indeed it does. I've tested it against all known light gun games. There are no issues with this unit. RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - Mariotroid - 02-02-2018 That's really neat. I'm sure a lot of games use the zapper as it was a huge selling point for the NES. I'm no good with hardware, so I'll ask: any cool fangame or Rom hacks that might utilize it? Only hardware stuff I've done is modding my wii. RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - The Shadow - 02-02-2018 Well, there is the Arcade to NES port of duck hunt, which is definitely worth getting running on an NES. Super Russian Roulette would benefit from the extended cord. at least in the case of playing with an extended crowd. There are a few hacks for both Duck Hunt and Hogans alley, but nothing outside of graphical modifications. (Granted, some of these are pretty impressive.) As for fangames,(Assuming I'm on the same page here) unfortunately, this wouldn't work on a home computer (At least not without further modifications, as well as connecting a computer to a CRT TV screen). All I did was run with a theory of Connecting point A to point B on the NES hardware, just using the Cat5e cable as an interchangeable part for the modification. While the Cat5e can be removed, and used for its intended purpose, it cannot be used to connect the Zapper, or the NES to the internet either. Sorry. I would like to put out there: If I could make this thing work on a computer, I would in less than a heartbeat. RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - The Shadow - 02-02-2018 Quick update: That Zapper wasn't the only controller of mine to suffer a severed wire. While I had planned to do this to a Sega Genesis controller, it turns out that there just isn't enough wires inside a Cat5e socket to make it happen. (IT NEED ONE MORE! AAAAAAGH!) HOWEVER, I was able to fix an N64 controller which suffered the same fate. ![]() This works the same as with the NES zapper, and can even use the same cat5e cable utilized for it. Before you ask: Due to the wiring methods, there is no possible way that this N64 controller can work on the NES. This wasn't even considered from the get-go I'm afraid. This mod is proving very handy for the things I've installed it into. I may take this to a larger scale in the future. RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - VinnyVideo - 02-02-2018 This is very cool! I was surprised to learn that you could modify an Ethernet cable to connect a Zapper or an N64 controller. It would be super-cool to see you make an N64 controller that can be connected to a computer using USB, although that would probably be tough. Unfortunately, because of the way the Zapper works, it's only compatible with CRT displays. RE: A slightly modified NES zapper - The Shadow - 02-02-2018 Actually, since you brought this up: Those USB adapters would still work without any problems. as the actual connector remains unmodified. |
