Some nosy questions to the site admins - chucklehuck - 05-21-2018 Hello, This is the second thread I ever created here, I'm not too familiar with this site's background, how it came to be and the "culture" that developed here in the time that it has been around. I'm curious so I want to ask: How long has this site been around? I looked up in the wayback machine and it only goes back as far as 2004. Who started it? Is he/she still around on the site? Why was the original motivation for starting it? What tech is this site built on? I'm guessing that it's probably PHP but I would like to know a bit more. Why hasn't the site's design been updated in any way over the years? The way that the site looks in the wayback machine is literally the exact same. I understand the philosophy of don't fix what isn't broken but this isn't a government site. If the answers to these questions are none of my business all you need to do is tell me and I won't stick my nose where it doesn't belong. I'm just curious. RE: Some nosy questions to the site admins - VinnyVideo - 05-21-2018 No problem! chucklehuck Wrote:How long has this site been around?MFGG has existed since 2001. Its predecessor, Bowser Technologies, is a bit older than that. chucklehuck Wrote:Who started it? Is he/she still around on the site? Why was the original motivation for starting it?@Thunder Dragon is the original creator of MFGG. He's not super-active these days, but he still exists! He could probably explain in greater detail why he created MFGG. chucklehuck Wrote:What tech is this site built on?The MFGG mainsite runs on PHP code written by @Retriever II. TCSMS was coded specifically for MFGG. The forums run on the latest version of MyBB, and the Wiki runs on MediaWiki 1.20.8. chucklehuck Wrote:Why hasn't the site's design been updated in any way over the years?Don't worry - we're working on updating the mainsite software, since the mainsite's interface is showing its age. It has some bugs that irritate both staff members and regular users, too. @HylianDev is spearheading this project (prod, prod). The last major update to the mainsite was way back in summer 2006. Here's how MFGG looked right before this update.. R II and Techokami have made a few security patches and bugfixes since then, but that's about it. Does this make sense? Let me know if there's anything else you're curious about! RE: Some nosy questions to the site admins - Mario - 05-21-2018 If you want to participate in development of the new site software, here's an invite to the dedicated Discord; and here's the Github repo. RE: Some nosy questions to the site admins - Kritter - 05-21-2018 As this isn't really a suggestion for the forums, it probably belongs in General Chat. |
