Replacing Sheets - SonicKade2048 - 05-28-2018 Last I checked, there have been memory issues with sheets overflowing the main site. I may be wrong, or I may be right, but either way, I have something to ask. Recently I've seen some sheets on the site that are almost carbon copies of other sheets already on the site. Heck, one of my own sheets got declined for there being too many related ones already on the site. My suggestion is that we remove older, more outdated sheets that could be cluttering and filling up the main site's memory, when there's more sheets that could be better than the older ones. I'm not saying we should remove peoples' hard work, just ones that seem to be related or clones of other sheets should be stored somewhere other than the main site, or if it comes to this, removed altogether. I just think there's too many sheets on the main site that are just copies of other sheets. What do you all think? Should we move older sheets onto someplace else, or keep them where they are now? RE: Replacing Sheets - Pedigree - 05-28-2018 In my opinion, sheets that are copies and do not improve over the other sheet already on the site would be declined (and they currently are afaik). The older sheet would only be deleted if the newer sheet was an improvement (and only ripped graphics), and to be more realistic: if members report the old sheet. I personally will not expect staff to go through all the old submissions to decide what to delete and I don't think you should either. Also, as I said on Discord... file sizes on Sprite sheets are so small that deleting a few outdated ones would have almost no impact, if any at all, on our performance. RE: Replacing Sheets - VinnyVideo - 05-28-2018 @KirbyLover2048 I don't think you understand how these things work from a technical standpoint. MFGG is hosted on a server. A server is a computer that serves you with content - in our case, forum posts, games, sprites, Wiki articles, and so forth. Since a server is a computer, it has the same components that any computer would have - for example, a processor, RAM, and hard disks. If "memory" is referring to RAM, we're in no danger of running out of memory - this would probably require many thousands of people to go on MFGG at the same time. If you mean storage space when you speak of memory, MFGG still has plenty of free space. If storage space was an issue, removing a few old sprite sheets would have almost no effect - a sprite sheet might take up just a few kilobytes of space, while games might take up dozens of megabytes. Shifting from a technical perspective to a usability perspective, MFGG doesn't usually accept sprite sheets that are very similar to sheets that are already on the site. For example, we usually decline simple edits of other MFGGers' sprites. If you see any sprite sheets that are very similar to other submissions on the mainsite, feel free to report them and explain how there's another submission on MFGG that's more complete or better-organized. RE: Replacing Sheets - Mario - 05-28-2018 I agree with not accepting similar sheets but if a sheet is an improvement over an older one, no reason to not accept it and maybe de-list the older one from search + provide a link to what replaced it on its page. |
