Minigame Competition #9: Short-Fused Hero

Did you know that not one game will turn up if you search the MFGG section for games starring a Bob-Omb? It's a shame, really. So in this competition, your goal is to make a minigame or demo starring some variety of Bob-Omb character but here's the twist: You must somehow incorporate their signature explosion and short-fuse into the gameplay.

Da Rulez
  • Your minigame or demo must star some variety of Bob-Omb character.
  • Your minigame or demo must feature their signature explosion and short-fuse as a main gameplay feature.
  • Your minigame or demo may be developed in the program of your choosing. However, it must be submitted in a format that is easily playable by most. Unfortunately this means that an app developed for Android may not be acceptable, for example.
  • Your minigame or demo may not use any premade engines created outside of the competition, even if you developed it yourself.
  • You may enlist a maximum of three team members for your project or must specifically select three team members that would receive badges, should your project win at any level.
  • Resources such as music, sound effects, and sprites may be used even if they were developed outside of the competition. However, you must give credit for any outside work and must not attempt to represent someone else's work as your own.
Our competition's deadline is Saturday, June 23rd at midnight PST.

does that no engine rule include sound or control engines? How much pre-written code is too much?

RE: Minigame Competition # 9: Short-Fused Hero - VinnyVideo - 06-01-2018

@Syaxamaphone It's totally OK to reuse simple libraries like a sound engine or a control system. Huge premade engines like the Hello Engine aren't allowed for Minigame Comps, though.

Yeah, what Vinny said.

I have an idea but I think my programming is best suited to my fangame. This is a nice theme. I wish everyone good luck on this!!

This is a good theme, there's lots of ways to go with this. It's hard to choose one!

Here's my entry

I doubt the fuse explosion is part of the main gameplay, but whatever, it's too late :3
The goal is to count the number of bob-ombs of each type. A single mistake will lead them to explode.

Looks very original, well done.

I didn't really get time to make a video or screen shot. Just Imagine pool, except you play as the Q-ball, and the only way to get the ball to move is to explode. The faster you are moving when you explode, the faster the eggs will travel away from you. Press F1 for help and credits

I played all of 'em. Here's my two cents:

Simpson55: I really enjoyed this one. I love how it starts off simple but gradually ramps up until it reaches ludicrous speeds. I wish you could've wrapped around to the other end by pressing left or right when at the first or last option, but that's honestly a minor gripe.

Yoshi2000: It's a pretty basic game that doesn't really get any harder. Not much to really say here.

Sushininja05: This is another one that I really liked. I found the fact that you could write stuff on the instructions screen to be charming in a weird way, and the game itself reminds me a lot of some old flash games. This one would've been my favorite, but I ran into some glitches: the fuel and time survived stats would not reset between runs most of the time, and in one case, the Bob-Omb just ran past the green arrow altogether. Overall, still pretty cool!

Littlelum: I can see a lot of potential in this concept. It took me a while to figure out that you actually had to build up speed in order to launch the eggs in different directions, but once that was settled I was able to get it done fairly easily (although my score sucked, haha). I also feel like this game would have benefited more if you could just hold down the keys to gain speed instead of rapidly tapping them, and the fuse shouldn't really count in terms of hitboxes, but with a bit of polish and more levels I could see this being really fun.

Overall, I would say I enjoyed Simpson55's entry the most, so he gets my vote. Good job to everyone that participated!
