Hello. I'm not quite sure what engine to use for my game. Would be a good move to create my own?

First of all, welcome to MFGG!
Engines can mean a lot of different things. Before we offer any suggestions, what kinds of games are you interested in making? Is it a 2-D platformer, a 3-D platformer, a shooter, a JRPG, or something else? Is it a Mario fangame, some other kind of fangame, or an indie project? What programming languages and dev environments are you most comfortable using? Course clear! You got a card.

To reply to both of your replies, I am looking to create a 2D Mario platformer fangame. As for the second reply, I would like to use a template to make an executable game, rather than a level pack, mod, or hack, although i wouldn't mind having to use an environment. As for what I'm comfortable with, i honestly haven't done much game development as i hope that this would be somewhat good practice for either programming and game design. Thank you for reaching out.

Game Maker is a great starting point for making the kinds of games you have in mind. GM's free version is full-featured, and it's relatively easy for beginners to use while being powerful enough for moderately advanced developers.
You might want to try the Gatete Mario Engine, a GM engine that includes an impressive variety of features. If you don't like GM or you find it doesn't quite "click" for you, Godot and Clickteam Fusion are also worth a try. Course clear! You got a card.

Thank you! Ive been trying to use the gatete mario engine, however im having problems having GM2 actually let me work with it, as itr always says something about failing to import the yyz when i try to use it as a template, however ill most likely make a separate thread on it as to not go off topic.

In regards to Vinny's statements about Clickteam Fusion: should you need a good pre-built engine, go give Rage's Platform Movement a try. It costs $5 for the full version, but Rage is a MFGG OG, and I think he deserves that because it's a really good engine. There's a lite version, but I don't remember how it differs from the full one.

Thank you, I may look into that. It sounds interesting.
