I think Super Mario World might be one of my favorite Mario games despite it being inarguably ugly. That awful blind cape jump level hurts it badly though. I hate that level a lot it is very bad. Still the game is definitely up there with Odyssey and Sunshine for me.

But my favorite Mario game is Paper Mario

Super Mario World's graphics are funny. Pretty much every review I've ever seen (including recent ones) has praised the game's graphics. Of course, if you look even semi-closely at SMW's graphics, you can find all kinds of glaring inconsistencies. SMW's graphics are bright and cheerful, but it's hard to deny that the graphics designers made some odd decisions.

I prefer SMB3 over SMW, although I have a lot of great memories playing SMW, and I still find SMW to be a very enjoyable game.

I think the inconsistencies and sometimes downright ugly graphics used in SMW along with the vibrant colors gives it some sort of charm. It reminds me of a child's doodles in the sense that it's very colorful but not necessarily pretty or cohesive.

Super Mario World was one of the first SNES games, so you can't expect the sprites to be good.

Mario's Rather Unusual Trilogy (Mario's slightly unusual Boss Rush (Completed), Mario vs. Some Unusual Foes (In development), Mario's VERY Unusual Final Frontier (In development))

Wasn't Super Mario Bros for the NES a launch title on a system with even more restrictions to what you can accomplish?

That game still holds up graphically for me today... So I don't agree that you can't expect SMW graphics to be good just because it was an early game in the SNES' life.

I think a lot of SNES games had ugly graphics. Donkey Kong Country is so staticy and dithered to an unnecessary degree. Super Mario RPG has this same problem. Super Metroid had some ugly orange environments.

I have to say the graphics for SNES were not THAT bad, however the gameboy advance did what the SNES couldn' do in terms of sprirlte graphics.

There are plenty of nice looking games on the SNES, like Yoshi's Island, A Link to the Past, and Kirby Super Star. I like Super Mario World's ugliness for the reason I mentioned above but they definitely could have made it look pretty if they wanted to.

This is 100% speculation, but I'd bet Super Mario World incorporated a lot of placeholder graphics into the game's prototypes. Then the development team ran out of time and had to ship a game with plenty of graphical inconsistencies. Also, because of the way the game's graphics are compressed (some objects share pieces of different sprites), it may have become more difficult to fix things (although this certainly hasn't stopped ROM hackers from making SMW-inspired games with cohesive graphics).

If my hypothesis is true, the moral of the story is to have a consistent plan for your graphics, and to remember that placeholder graphics often make their way into the final product, so be careful!

I still think the graphics and animations in the DKC games are pretty cool. And yeah, Yoshi's Island is still one of the most graphically-appealing games I've ever seen.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 is another Super NES game with a great art style.

mario and sonic at the olympics notwithstanding, i'm gonna go back to the topic of super mario world's graphics. i've heard from plenty of people that its art style is irredeemably poor, but since this is all subjective anyway, i think super mario world looks wonderful. i could go into excruciating detail here, but what you need to take away from this is that super mario world is a game i adore, warts and all.

I adore SMW, considering I played the game and liked its physics being accessible to all walks of life while also being challenging, and also I hack it myself. I still think the graphics for what it is, is poor and inconsistent, but it is serviceable for the game. That being said, its also a rushed game that could have used polishing up in some aspects that hackers took note of and made fix patches, most of which I use myself as well as some extras.

And yes, Mario 2 is a good game, both the lost levels and doki doki panic games are good. Lost Levels for those who like challenges who can get past the bs parts and DDP for a unique experience with tossing plants in a dream world, while being accessible to casuals.

3D World is cool but 3D Land was a bore. 3D World gave us a nice blend of NSMB and Mario 64 type gameplay, though definitely more on the NSMB side.

SMB3 > SMW.
No love for Mario Galaxy Sad ? That would be the best Mario if it wasn't for some tedious purple coin missions and some very easy parts.

Looks better than SMRPG and DKC1 combined. It's also more fun!

I really liked it too. That final Bowser music was dope! Graphics haven't aged that well though.

Now, about the definitely not overrated Super Paper Mario...

Paper Mario has aged quite well for a 64 game due to its use of 2D character graphics, but yes it's definitely not as pretty as Paper Mario 2. And yes, its soundtrack is great, probably being my favorite out of any Mario game along with Sunshine's.
I don't hate Super Paper Mario but I wouldn't replay it. It was fun to play through once (actually twice, but the first time I played it I was very young and I skipped all the text) but there wasn't a lot about the gameplay that would bring me back to it. The story is great, but that's not enough to get me to play through the whole game again.

Mario 2 is probably the black sheep of the original trilogy on the NES.

SMB3, on the other hand, is so beloved that several fangame creators want to create "Super Mario Bros 3: The Sequel to the Threequel." Even if it is called Super Mario World
Trolling, how not to behave!
