Live action kid's movies are really interesting to me. They seem kind of hit or miss, most of the time missing because they try too hard to be cartoonish despite not being cartoons. What's your favorite live action kid's movie?

Mine is definitely the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
I hate all the sequels because they ruin the characters for me, but the original is legendary. The cast is great, the villain is amazing, the writing is clever, the soundtrack is gold, and it doesn't show too much (we never needed to see Will's father!). I love the twist it puts on the typical “pirates kidnap governor's daughter so the navy goes out to save her” plot by introducing the skeleton pirates, making it a 3 way battle between the pirates, the navy, and the skeleton pirates. The characters are all developed and well written, even the supporting characters. Overall best pirate movie to me.

What are your favorite movies in this genre/sub-genre (not really sure what to call it)?

Spy Kids has a weird tone that could only exist in this kind of movie, works really well.

I tried watching Pirates of the Caribbean around when it first came to DVD and I couldn't get into it at all- fell asleep watching it. Shame as a lot of people love it, I'm sure I'm missing out on something.

My favorite is probably Kamen Rider × Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen - really fun crossover film between the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series with a plot that works really well- can't say the same for the future installments of the Super Hero Taisen series unfortunately. My only complaint about the film itself is that the inclusion of the current series Super Sentai team and Kamen Rider didn't feel like they fit in all that well; it would have been better to leave them out (though I guess having them in there gets kids who are watching those series to the cinema- not sure LOL).

As far as stuff I've seen as a kid I'd probably have to go with Matilda. Just a great film all around imo.

Personally for me it's Monkey Trouble. I loved it as a kid.
