What's going on with submissions?

I'm noticing a difference in the amount of time it takes for submissions to be approved. Submissions used to take a few days to be approved and become visible to everyone, at least on my end. Since a couple of months ago, a strange cycle has been noticeable for me. The site will be silent for almost two weeks on end, and then a dozen new submissions will get shoved in overnight. The site will go silent again for even more time. I think this cycle first started when we got a new site moderator. This is ironic because he/she wrote on his/her first update: "I'll be helping get submissions through the queue in a quick and timely manner."

If anyone has an explanation for this strange cycle, I'd love to hear it! Thanks in advance.

hmm i think something might've changed, mainly rips are starting to appear more and more and they seem to appear faster than custom sprites which might need to be looked into
