Given the current state of the forums, were we always meant to move the discord server or most people couldn't keep up?

Yeah to be honest, I agree with the statement even if Discord does have its uses, mostly for more live chat rather than a forum replacement, because I feel like forums are so much better for project showcasing and long form discussion and such; granted, I haven't used forums much these days because they were phased out for the most part and I haven't really tried anything to help liven things up (given any of my projects are pretty much all backburner stuff other than my framework for Godot 4 so I don't really have confidence in making a thread for stuff if I can't really keep updating it
![]() It just feels like everything just moved to social media and thus you don't really get the same sense of community like you get with forums and actual discussion (twitter word limit my behated) unless you got a big audience yourself :/ (the discord itself is a whole nother matter for me but I just kinda only stick around in it to keep up with cool projects that do get shown on there) [ sorry if i dont make sense its like 8:50pm rn but i HAD to speak on this actually because i feel quite strongly about this and how the modern internet is just not good compared to what I grew up with)

What I like about forums is that even you were away for a while, it's not that hard to catch up, especially since you can ignore certain threads if you want. Discord is more like a "had to be there" type of thing, where you can only join a conversation right when it's happening. It's too much like real life to me.

Exaaactly, huge agreed on this, theres only so much you can scroll up onto past messages to even give input on something :P (or you cant at all because different conversation going on) once again, discord is definitely meant as a chatroom, not a forum replacement

It makes finding information much more difficult, discord servers don't get indexed on search engines, and you have to join them to see content within (ignoring the fact that it's also at the will of both Discord as a company choosing whether or not to ban a server, and the server owners management of said server). However once you're already in a discord server, I can't deny that it's just much more convenient to use, which is probably why such a shift exists.

Discord is a tolerable replacement for Skype or IRC. Discord is a terrible replacement for forums. Discord is fine for shooting the breeze and brainstorming ideas, but it's a lousy way to share games, art, or tutorials that you want people to be able to find through Google.
@littlelum Yeah, forums work a lot better than chats when you're busy and you want to jump back into a conversation that happened earlier in the day or a few days ago. That's easy to do with a forum - and highly awkward to do in an active chat. @Thunderbro That's another risk of relying on Discord - there's no easy way to back up content in the event that Discord or a rogue admin pulls the plug on your community for some reason. With forums, running regular backups is fairly easy. Course clear! You got a card.

I might be old-school but I absolutely despise Discord serving as a replacement for forums.
It's like an endless stream of consciousness and it's terrible to showcase your project in it, or start a meaningful discussion to come back to, and it's very easy to be "out of the loop" when something happens and you weren't there to witness it. We really should incentivize the usage of forums more, and encourage more people to show off their work here.

It would definitely be nice to have more people show off the games they are working on in a forum thread, it keeps discussion on a single game far more organized, and people who haven't joined the discord can see that the community is still here making fangames. Currently, new posts in that section are sorely lacking for sure.

Call me old if you'd like, but I can't see discord or any chat as a replacement for forums. I recently rejoined the MFGG Discord, and it was cool for the moment, but I haven't done anything in there since I talked for the first 5 minutes. Good for instant gratification, but hell if I try to talk about anything from yesterday. Hell if I try to talk about anything from 2 hours ago. I think they tried to mitigate this via the quoting feature, but then it starts to become a horrible mess of multiple conversations going on at once and trying to determine who's part of what conversation, or even where YOU are. Plus, visibility on anything you want to announce or speak out is reduced to whoever happens to be there at the time. |
