Godot is probably the way of the future. FOSS, 3D support and it supports multiple languages, not just its own. C# is real easy to wrap your head around if you know the basics of how to code(which you should if you've been using GM for so long) and Godot supports that fully.

Unity is OK but you're forced to use its lighting and physics for the most part unless you wanna hack something together. It doesn't support true 2D either, instead its a locked camera facing a plane in 3D space.

These days I use C++ for game development but nothing I make actually works.

All hail Godot!!!
I gotta get around to learning C#. Godot is really user friendly with what I've seen. Its "nodes" feature makes everything easier.

Godot is the same with it's physics, I had to port a collision system from a c# framework to get good retro physics
