I was just wondering...
Has anyone else here played through Doki Doki Literature Club?

I played it. It was pretty cool for a free visual novel, but I feel like ot was way overhyped.

I didn't play it first hand, but a friend live streamed it and a couple other friends and I watched and were in chatting while he played. It took us about 13 hours to complete the game, and it was one of the best experiences of my life

Yeah, I guess so. People are really overreacting about how good it is. Even though it was good, I personally think it takes way too long to get to the meat of the game.

@Dock - 13 hours? Huh? How'd you guys manage that? The main campaign is supposed to take only 4 and a half...

Question: When the game starts to *cough* deteriorate, are those "messed up graphics" made from scratch? Or is there a way to code that into a game (for the graphics to get "messed up")?

I'm not sure how they did it, but there's certainly a way to program the graphics to do that.

The text also; they just gave it a really ugly border, and at times used weird characters.

i have good friends that recommend that i should play this game because it's so effed up. knowing that it's free, this makes me more likely to want to give it a go, even though it's hyped up too much.

because this game is so hyped, i get the impression that it's something like one of those anime that tries to sell itself on how cerebral and subversive it is. that is, it's the kind of anime that geeks in the west are supposed to love because it's not like the stereotypical anime with lots of japanese goofiness and a side of fanservice.

does anyone understand what i'm trying to say? i'm both drunk and not very eloquent when it comes to things like this.

@fireball3k Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.

Doki Doki Literature Club sounds like an interesting concept, and its low price (can't beat a price of $0) makes it more accessible to people who wouldn't normally play VNs. I haven't played a lot of VNs, although I'd probably prefer one that isn't quite this... dark.

I haven't played it but I watched Rev from Vinesauce play it. It's pretty okay as far as visual novels seem to go. A bit dark and touches on surprisingly real issues.

DDLC isnt perfect (some of the writing didnt quite hit for me and a couple of the scares felt really rote and cliche to the point of being more funny than scary) but the game legit has a bunch of interesting stuff in it (there's a wide array of unique and creative scares with next to no jump scares, not to mention all the external game file stuff) and it left me feeling emotionally drained afterwards so i'd say it def has merit.
