I saw this video pretty recently and thought: "This almost looks like an old fangame made with The Games Factory!" From the weird static physics, to how you start out in mid-air rather than on the ground, to the cheaply placed Bullet Bill, to the way Yoshi spins around after getting hit, to the familiar but slightly weird graphics and music, it all really feels like something I might find by browsing through MFGG's early games, or even how-tos! I especially get Super Mario PC and Biebersoft game vibes from it!

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Ha, indeed! The Yoshi's Story GBA tech demo screams "old Clickteam fangame." I don't think TGF could've handled zooming in the camera, but otherwise this looks and feels a lot like old-school Clickteam.
Course clear! You got a card.

I should've also mentioned that the comically resized Shy Guys contribute to that oldschool Clickteam feel too! Even the way they shrink feels a bit fangame-like. As for the camera zooming in, I know Yoshi RPG: Secret Legends, a TGF game, has camera zooming for screen transitions, although I'm not sure if that's possible to do during gameplay (i.e. when things are moving). Wonder if that's some sort of extension being used.

Hm, did @DJ Yoshiman make this tech demo? Thinking

Speaking of tech demos that look like fangames, this Wii tech demo looks like it came straight out of Newgrounds:

Nah, it's not poopy enough to be a tech demo made by me lol

Also Yoshi RPG used an extension for those transitions, yep. Didn't start messing with zooming during gameplay until MMF 1.5.

@DJ Yoshiman Holy Yoshi, it's the Yoshiman himself! I mean, I was half-expecting you to show up, but I still gasped when I saw your name by this thread in the index page! Haha, I suppose that the tech demo isn't weird enough to scream "young Yoshiman"! If you did make it back then, it would be more like the unfinished Yoshiman level in Yoshi Gone MFGG! Like, there's no mutant Koopa Troopa with a Goomba head in the tech demo, but there sure is one walking around in your level!

It's pretty cool to hear about the extension! Do you remember what it was called, and where you got it from? I found not one, but two lists of TGF/CNC extensions (albeit most extensions are shared between), but from what I can see there doesn't seem to be an extension that does magic with transitions.

You know what, thinking back on it now, I think Yoshi RPG was a MMF game. If it only has an exe, that would confirm it.
Just checked, yep, exe only, it's a MMF game. The zooming transitions are built-in as of 1.5, I believe.

Huh, really!? *checks the game* Oh my gosh, you're right! That corrupted TGF icon, used as one of the game icons, must've really thrown me off! I guess I never suspected the lack of a .gam file. Haha, to think I recently taught @Vitiman that Super Mario Epic 2 was made with CNC, not MMF, and now I've learned that Yoshi RPG was actually made with MMF, not TGF! Laughing So, I guess the Yoshi's Story tech demo was also made with MMF... by some mystery person!

By the way, DJ Yoshiman, since you're here (at least a few days ago), have you heard about the secret I've uncovered in Toad Strikes Back? I believe it's been hidden for about 20 years. You could even tell Thunder Dragon about it! Smile

I distinctly remember this being a thing that got discussed back around the time MFGG was founded. Haven't seen it in years lol
