I'm serious.
inb4 PK is a furry

No but to be honest, I've had a long curiosity to cosplay. The thing is, most of my favorite characters aren't humans, but if I wanted to do that, I would prefer to make a fursuit or something in that direction. I've never had a strong liking of just having a human in the the costume that the character wears, it doesn't seem like it goes far enough.

I've thought about who I would do if I ever were to do something like that.
Samurott, the Pokemon, for instance, is one that's intrigued me. Same with Nack the weasel from Sonic. But both of those would require making suits with their specific body feautres, and sewing is something I have practically no experience in. That itself is the big barrier preventing me from doing this at all and it being stuck to just an idea.
Well I've had an idea brewing in me for months, and this one might actually be feasible.

There's a character I've known about for years, but never played the game he's from until January of this year.

His name is Daroach.
He's from Kirby Squeak Squad on the DS. He's the leader of a band of thieves called the Squeaks, who keep trying to get the treasure chests that Kirby collects.
Using his spirit a lot in Smash Ultimate was what really got me to eventually try Squeak Squad out. It's pretty good! It plays a lot like Adventure. But I eventually just fell in love with Daroach, now that I met him in game. and since then I've really come to adore him even more. What's more, Kirby Star Allies, the Switch Kirby game, added a bunch of playable characters from the series as free DLC friends, and Daroach is one of them!

Now I have the idea in my head to make a costume of him and cosplay as him. And I feel there's some steps I can take where it can be more feasible. But it's a big project regardless.

I would have to make:
  • His head
  • His hat
  • His cape
  • His body
  • His staff
I've had a lot of ideas for how to do every one of these.
For his head, I wanted to follow the steps shown in this video from How it's Made: Mascot suits.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8E8dttLuvI
I even bought some foam on clearance from a JoAnn fabrics store an hour away that was going out of business, which has sat in my room for a couple of months already.
For his hat, I wanted to get something that would be a similar shape as the basis for it, like a garbage can.For his cape,
I would have to sew something, but I would need to have sort of a blueprint of what to do with the fabric.
For his body I was thinking of repurposing a rat costume you could find on Amazon or something. It would be cheap to do, but it would have to be done right too. He has his yellow claws, for instance.
As it turns out, I actually have started a bit of work on the staff he uses! I got the 3d model of Daroach from Kirby Star Allies and got the front of his staff which I 3d printed at a library. I modelled a hole in it to which I would insert a black plastic pipe in and glue it... but the hole was just too small. So I have to sand the pipe down to get it to fit. I have to keep working at this, including painting the 3d print, which supposedly requires sanding it first to get the paint stick.
This would be quite a task to do, and that doesn't include finding an appropriate gaming con to wear this in, yet I would love to do this one day!

You should go for it whenever you can. I don't know the first thing about cosplay creation, but I'm sure you're right that it'd be quite the challenge but also very gratifying when you get it done. Challenges are good though, so if you have the time to dedicate to it and it's something you really want to do you should.

I guess what I'm looking for most is ideas and input. Input on what I could do.

Well, I guess I have some experience here since I've built a fullsuit scyther costume (actually going to be competing with it at Connecticon tomorrow .. we'll see how that goes!)

I'd recommend buying some anti-pill fleece (it's always on sale at Joanne and pretty cheap). It's not as visually cool as fur/minky/whatever a lot of fursuits are made with, but it's a very forgiving material and would be good practice. If you want to try learning some sewing with a smaller project, I design and make pokemon fleece hats, and I could give you some sewing patterns to try out. I'd suggest maybe looking into building a fleece kigurumi first, which would be a good practice project on its own and maybe could lead to an actual costume as well.

(Bad lighting ahoy)
This is sort of version 1.5, with a fully rebuilt thorax and wings. I have a thread from last Halloween with a few earlier pictures.

It's a bit unusual for a fullsuit/fursuit in that I used spandex as a covering (which I thought was pretty ideal for a bug)
