This YYG blog post does a good job explaining some steps you can take to make it harder for players to modify save files generated by your games.

This probably isn't necessary if you're making a simple platformer where all you're saving is the number of levels completed, but hack-proofing your save files can definitely be an issue if you're making more complex games (for example, if you're making online high scores or a game with MMO elements).
