Right now I'm playing an indie RPG called Sea of Stars. It fixes a lot of issues I've had with other turn-based RPGs. Now, instead of spamming the basic attacks and hoarding MP, I'm actually using my stronger attacks regularly. This is because regular attacks actually refill MP, which is something that I'm surprised hasn't been done earlier (as far as I'm aware).
There's other things too, such as how swapping party members mid-battle doesn't cost a turn, making tough boss fights a game where you have to juggle your party members based on their health, abilities, etc.
I think the best way to describe it as a modernized SNES-style RPG.
