I joined the forums back in 2005. I used to be really into old school Mario games when I was younger, I found a sprite comic website called Geoweasel back in like 2002-2003, and in turn I created my own sprite comic website called Silver Koopa and Friends and together we had a pretty big sprite comic community. One of the people in the community was a MFGG user named Sergent Jinpen. At the time I was here, I just really enjoyed the MFGG community, pointless posts palace, drawings, Duckboy, Shadowman, I used to talk to Roxxorz Your Boxxors quit frequently on AIM chat. The jokes, the pranks, the fun all had me coming back day after day. Here is my wiki:  Nowhere Man - Mario Fan Games Galaxy Wiki

I haven't been active here since like 2008. I am interested in gamemaking, and came back to play some of the games on the main website. What have I missed????

MFGG went through a lot of changes, many PhpBB forums and now we have this one that runs on MyBB

Also, I did joined in 2007 as Darkyoshi. Does that name ring a bell?

Most activity now is done at the Discord and I am trying all sorts of things to bring back activity here :P

The name sounds familiar, but I was mostly lurking in 2007. Awesome to see you as site admin. I deleted Discord from my desktop, what sort of things do you all do on there?

Hey, welcome back! I don't think we've ever chatted, but I remember seeing your name and liking it. I always liked that Beatles song!

It's possible that a thing or two has happened since 2008! The quality of fangames has grown a lot, though MFGG still provides a space for short and wacky fangames too. More recently, I've made a bunch of upgrades to the site software and infrastructure to add new features, squash bugs, and improve performance and accessibility.

I don't really use the MFGG Discord - I'm a forums guy! I mostly use Discord for individual chats. Curiously, I've never used any of the Discord apps - I've only experienced Discord through the browser version.

Soveryhappy

So very much I would like to know, as I remember the boards had a very large and user-returning audience at all times, really. When did the forums start becoming inactive? I would like to use this topic a tribute to old MFGG, if I may, I might search for some of the stuff from the past and post them here.

I believe two major shifts contributed to the decrease in MFGG community activity:

1. The rise of commercial social media - especially Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. This didn't have much of an effect on MFGG as a fangaming resource, but it made it much harder to make MFGG a hangout.

2. The release of Mario Maker in 2015. Having a high-quality official level editor diverted a lot of interest from making fangames, and after that point, the rate of new members decreased. (Mario Maker also killed off the Hello Engine scene, which had both pros and cons.)

MFGG is still active, and I'm hopeful that people will grow tired of social media and decide that nonprofit forums are still really cool! Especially since every major social network delivers a worse user experience every year.

And yeah, feel free to post cool things from MFGG's past that you'd like to share! I always enjoy seeing that kind of thing.

So quick question, I was going to gather up some old material, are the MFGG archives no longer available?

By MFGG archives, I assume you mean the old IPB forums. It's funny you mention that - I had to disable them for a brief time last night because 10,000 (yes, really) bots were visiting that archive at the same time. This was causing everything on the MFGG server (the mainsite, the current forums, the Wiki, even things like NCFC) to slow to a crawl. MFGG has had some issues with overzealous bots before, but this is the craziest it's been.

But don't worry - the IPB archives still exist, and I'll get them accessible again this weekend.

So I am on my old account. I guess I was fairly active all the way up to August 2008, and then some in the summer of 2009. So if you think I remember what was going on when The Dark Knight came out, I don't. Smile Most of the memories that stick for me are from the earlier days I was there. WasabiCatto, for example, I know from lurking after I stopped habitually visiting MFGG, and visited every once in awhile to just check the site. I don't even remember if I joined the next message board after IBForums went down in 2009.

Some things I noticed early on, was that, yes I was a fan of Duckboy right off the bat, mostly his art. My favorite fast food restaurants were Taco Bell and Wendy's. Taco Bell is an occasional goodness, I think I'm pass on Wendy's now. I also have some memories of playing MapleStory around this time. I joined the forums when I was 12. When I am on the main page, all the birthdays are around 30+ now. Apparently, I made some really good "Boo" sprites for a competition days after I first joined, I would like to see them but I cannot. Anyways, with imageshack and photobucket no longer accessible there is probably a lot of high quality really refreshing art and photos that I am missing out on here.

And really, that is what I loved about the community in the first place, was that, after going through some old account's DeviantArt galleries, this was a group of people who were really skilled at creating art. And lots and lots of time consuming matter to say the least. I had never been part of a community who was, in my opinion, so developed.

Anyways, that is my starting point on my accumulation as of right now.

Yeah, that's one of the things that made old-school MFGG so special - the art! Whether it was professional artists or absolute beginners, it was always fun to see what people would create.

The MFGG forums don't have quite as much variety of art as they once did, but I still enjoy seeing the artistic creations that people share here.

And yeah, it's a bummer that a lot of externally-hosted images aren't preserved anywhere. Some competition winners are showcased on the competition pages on the MFGG Wiki, so you might want to take a glance at those.

Some of the jokes were funny, though. As it turns out, I did submit the Boo sprites I made on the main site:

And of course, as it turns out, I did not even make it to the top 5. I was a "Gosh dang it" and "Freaking" kind of guy. I still think that "Soul Blazer" is one of the most underrated video games of all-time. Yeah my art wasn't "good" or "amazing". It was "okay". I became a much better "sketch", "cartoonish" "doodle" drawing in the latter half of the decade in high school and what not. I haven't doodled in a long while, I am getting back into "paper" art again. My style during this time was newspaper comics, Jim Jenkins style, or so i was told by the other MFGG users.

In 2006, my favorite musical artists were: Beatles, Queen, Nirvana, Jack Johnson, Barenaked Ladies, John Mayer, Weezer, Matchbox 20, and Counting Crows. Nickelodeon’s “Doug” is not someone I aspire to be like. LOL. Around this time I was playing “City of Villains”. I did not know basic “How to check how much space you have on the computer”. Earthbound 3 came out.  Legends the Game? https://web.archive.org/web/20070501062310/http://legendsthegame.net/ I remember playing this game, brought by Shadow Man and really enjoying it. I was also playing this exact game when I was told I was getting a nephew for the first time. My most played song on iTunes: "Bubble Toes" by Jack Johnson.

Some of the "submissions" for sprites were kind of harsh for some of the beginners, if you ask me, but I am certain it is quality control. I also found a perfect "sprite" how-to topic* with much helpful tips and information, but alas, the images are no longer available. I am going to try to wrap this up as soon as I get a "feel" for everything.

Paul McCartney turned 64 on June 18, 2006. “When I'm sixty-four.” Firefox was the dominant web browser, do you still use it? I had 1,816 songs on my iPod. I was staying up until 4am every night in July 2006. My friend, who is a girl, joined the forums as was named “Brian Peppers”.
My artwork got exponentially better by August 2006. I also found CuteYoshiGirl on there finally. In fact, I drew her!

Ryan Gosling was one of my favorite actors in 2007, that surprises me as most of my most remembered movies I like from him came after that. I don’t know, the Notebook?? Honestly I wish I could delete like 3 or 4 posts, but oh well. If you ask, do I relate to myself back then as I do now, the answer is probably not. Kind of interesting, I will have conversations with certain people and it seems like they went through my old posts as a “way to get to know me” or something or another, which is a terrible reference point. Haha. Creepy.

So in (probably summer 2007), I started visiting Progress Boink website, and in their forums, they had these things called “Lists ‘o Sh*t” which were lists, mostly pop culture stuff like Top 100 Christmas Songs, Top 100 Beatles Songs, Top 100 Animated Movies, Top 100 Simpsons Episodes, and so on. They were really really good lists, not made by the writers of PB, but by the posters themselves. So yeah, I did make the Top 15 Mario games list and topics based on this: MFGG's Top 15 Mario Games - Mario Fan Games Galaxy Wiki … I would say it was a success. Probably my most successful MFGG thingy I did, topicwise and everything else. I don’t think I was one of the “popular” members. I also think this was about the time I stopped visiting a lot, and just visited every once and awhile.

You also may be asking did my “Nowhere Man” name change come from ShadowMan himself? That’s a good possibility I subconsciously did that, as I was a bit of a taker of things from this time period, like stealing people’s jokes and putting them on my facebook page.

I also made a N64 topic in the same jest. I finally found Dark Yoshi in these list topics. There were quit a few “Yoshis”. I think there was this geocities website with the title character being Purple Yoshi that was just a mario fansite, and I asked to join so I could add sprites to the site, and he/or she let me. It was my first array into the website making, I believe.

Here is the Nintendo 64 list:

20. Goemon's Great Adventure
19. Pokemon Stadium 2
18. Mario Party 2
17. Mischief Makers
16. Mario Party
15. Worms Armageddon
14. Diddy Kong Racing
13. Conker's Bad Fur Day

7. Banjo-Tooie
6. Mario Kart 64
5. Super Smash Bros.
4. Banjo-Kazooie
3. Paper Mario
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
1. Super Mario 64

I tried to do MFGG’s top beverages next but people were not into that. Should have stuck with the videogame themes.

Oh I also found the top SNES games, it was one of the last things I did on the forum:

15. Kirby's Dream Land 3
14. Star Fox
13. Super Mario Kart
12. Mega Man X
11. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
10. Donkey Kong Country
9. Super Metroid
8. Chrono Trigger

6. Earthbound
5. Super Mario All-Stars
4. Kirby Super Star
3. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
2. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
1. Super Mario World

I guess I knew Hammerguy from the Geoweasel and sprite comic days. I have been trying to find a Tank game from the groupboards/chatrooms we used to hang out it.

I don’t like me talking about actresses looks, etc. Like Paris Hilton is fine, I am more fond of her now then I was in say, 2006. MFer. Like Uma Thurman is just aesthetically in her own element, you know. Kirsten Dunst is very pretty just wasn’t that into her during her Spider-Man days, something about her personality in those films, though I love the movies. I am not that superficial I just don’t like to be imposed upon. Those are some posts I want to delete. And while it has aged, I still like Golden Eye 007 for n64, and I also love the halo games beyond what my thoughts were in 2008, so a lot of it is faulty.

“I would also like to state that my two favorite MFGGers don't post here anymore...Shadow Man and Duckboy null

edit: Other favorite members are Press Start and Jeff Silvers”
< --- This is 2009, now.

Hit it right from the start.

“That does remind me...RYB was one of the nicest guys I came across during my time at MFGG. Maybe the nicest. Good guy, and I wish him good luck whatever he may be doing now.”

Also, Kaepora, apparently.

Also Jinpen (who showed me the forums) and Duckboy are permabanned, btw.

And then I went rogue I think:

“For some reason I used to paranoid about watching what I say so I wont get banned but f*** that! I'm really not afraid to say anything on these boards now because I hardly visit them anyway”

Oh God, I am really not trying to get banned, no matter how abrasive I may “seem”.

My last post was November 2, 2009.

Thanks everyone for reading this with me, even though you stopped replying. Wink

I am now going to finish some side quest missions like playing games on the main site and checking out the MFGG Wiki in its entirety.

Probably not. Are you ShadowMan?

Anyways, the reason I made this topic was to gather my thoughts and posts to allow me to rewrite my Wiki page, to leave nothing undone or unfinished. I have the finished version, however, the MFGG wiki page, I can't log in and I don't think it's allowing new members. I could do "Forgot Password", but the e-mail I used to register for wiki is no longer available, it's gone, even with a correct password. Can someone edit it for me? If not, I will just post my new Wiki info here, and just leave it be.

Edit: Got it, you're Nite Shadow, I think we missed each other, for the most part, during our times here, as I was not on the EZBoards, nor was I here after 2009.

There is so much going on in the old forums, that it is too much for me to handle going through anything more than my own posts. and/or the topics I posted in.

Nowhere Man (also known by earlier aliases Silver Koopa and Fatso) is a former member of the online community Mario Fan Games Galaxy (MFGG), best known for creating the community project MFGG’s Top 15 Mario Games. Active mainly between 2005 and 2009, Nowhere Man contributed sprite art, forum discussions, and retrospective list projects that became notable parts of the community’s history.

Tenure at MFGG
Nowhere Man was first introduced to MFGG through a user named Sergeant Jinpen. Initially a casual visitor, he joined the message boards on March 8, 2005 under the username Silver Koopa, a recolored Koopa character. Seeking originality, he briefly adopted the nickname Fatso—inspired by a school joke—before settling on the lasting alias Nowhere Man.

Outside MFGG, he was involved in early sprite comic culture. Inspired by the webcomic Geoweasel, he launched his own site Silver Koopa and Friends, which developed a small community and eventually overlapped with MFGG connections.

When he joined MFGG at age 12, Nowhere Man’s first artistic contributions were in the sprite competitions, where he submitted a set of Boo sprites. Although the entries did not place in the top five, he later completed the full sprite sheet and submitted it to the main site. At the same time, his personal drawings for fun were underdeveloped, though this gradually changed. By high school, frequent doodling in class helped him refine his approach and establish a more distinct style of his own.

Nowhere Man became an active poster in the Pointless Posts Palace and was a fan of popular members such as Duckboy and ShadowMan. He frequently engaged in chats over AIM with users like Roxxorz Your Boxxors, and took part in forum pranks, jokes, and community art exchanges.

He remained consistently active until August 2008, with sporadic visits into mid-2009. His final confirmed post on the forum was on November 2, 2009.

In 2007, Nowhere Man created MFGG’s Top 15 Mario Games, a forum-wide voting project where members submitted their top five Mario games. The results were compiled into a ranked list, with Super Mario Galaxy taking the top spot at number one, followed by Super Mario Bros. 3 in second place and Super Mario 64 in third.

The list gained popularity within the community and is often cited as his most successful contribution. Due to its success, he later expanded the format to include the Top 20 Nintendo 64 Games and the Top 15 SNES Games.

Return to MFGG (2025)
On August 15, 2025, Nowhere Man rejoined the new MFGG forums under the name NowhereMan. His return was motivated by a desire to revisit the community and the main site with the goal of completing unfinished contributions. During this period he has been highly active in order to finalize projects and complete his body of work, marking a decisive chapter in his long-standing connection to MFGG.

Legacy
Nowhere Man is remembered as part of the mid-2000s era of MFGG, when the community was highly active and interconnected through fan projects, sprite art, and gaming discussions. Though not considered one of the “popular” members, his list projects and steady forum presence left a notable imprint on community memory.

His name change to Nowhere Man may have been subconsciously influenced by the fellow member ShadowMan, reflecting the cross-pollination of jokes, names, and ideas common in the forum culture of the period.
