I'd recommend not using stock/default assets, it just looks lazy and clashes with the pixel art. Also, the ground doesn't loop properly, and the star is slightly cut off. Did you also remember to credit the people who made the sprites?

You would be wise to fix the HTTPS issue with your site. According to Firefox, your site's HTTPS is improperly configured, and a lot of people are going to leave the site right then instead of setting up a security exception.

Love the music you used in this game!
It sounds veeeery familiar though.

Hmmmm...

HMMMMMMMM...

Oh, that's right, they are from my fangame! You literally decompiled Super Mario Flashback and stole the music and the sound effects from it!

If anyone wants a proof, just open the game and press play. The first thing you hear is Flashback's title theme. That line of Mario saying "Let's-a go" was recorded specifically for Flashback too.

But wait, there's more! In fact, a lot more! Here's a list of the other stolen tracks:
  • Death
  • Level Complete
  • Cool Cool Mountain (This isn't an original remix, rather from one of the Mario & Sonic games (forgot which one), BUT it was actually inside Flashback as a placeholder for Cool Cool Mountain.)
  • Mushroom Kingdom
  • Underground Theme
  • Possibly more idk it's pretty painful to play so i actually gave up at some point
The funniest part is that all level themes are actually pitched down. I don't know why they did that, probably to prevent me from discovering this game or something. But I've been aware of this for over a year by now anyways, so I don't think that was an effective strategy.

Oh yeah, I have the proof of them actually decompiling my game too. See, when you get a star in this game it plays the SM64 coin skipping sound. And at least at the time of this game's release, that sound effect wasn't available anywhere. I actually ripped it by myself, but never used it in the game. So it was an unused sound effect. And the only way to get an unused sound effect is, well, decompiling the game.

I also remember some people mentioning stolen Midas Machine sprites when I first shared this game on Flashback Discord, not sure if that's true or not though.

Given the, ahem, borrowed assets and the insecure connection, I can't help but think this seems a bit shady.

"Stolen" music? "Stolen" Midas Machine sprites? He "stole" a sound effect that you ripped (aka, "stole")?

None of this is for profit, right? It's all content that we, as the Mario fangaming community, create, right? For no money, just for fun and the joy of creation?

We're "stealing" the characters we use, we're "stealing" the original compositions when we re-compose them, we "steal" graphics and audio directly from Nintendo games all the time, sometimes by decompiling them. Unless somebody is profiting from this somewhere, I'm not sure I see the issue.

Yes, stole. Sure, it's not an illegal thing to use assets from other fangames, but that really shouldn't matter. What should matter is if it's ethical to do or not, and laws aren't what decides what's ethical or unethical. Rather it's us. And borrowing music and stuff from others' fangames without giving permission or giving credit is not ethical, at least it shouldn't be. Same for decompiling others games. If you guys really think those are an ethical and ok thing to do then I guess I'm officially done here.

Also, I used that coin sound effect to prove a point, I obviously don't care if someone uses it without permission or not.

Edit: Oh yeah they make a profit out of the stolen assets too, but even if they didn't this wouldn't be completely ok.

If your only proof of the game being decompiled is that you "exclusively" ripped an official Nintendo sound effect from Super Mario 64, then you're not really giving us much to work with.

I know you're not much of a reader, but he actually provided quite a bit more evidence than that in his post. Then again, I'm talking to the guy who has openly stated he doesn't like evidence being brought in to discussion, so maybe I'm talking to a brick wall or something, idk.

Let's try and avoid personal attacks, okay.
Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

I think it's hilarious some of you guys are complaining about people stealing your graphics and sounds while simultaneously making games using someone else's intellectual properties (and often, their assets as well).

It's worth noting MFGG has advertisements too - food for thought.

Literally the only proof he's offered in regards to decompiling the game is this sound effect. I provided the quote in its entirety right here.

The alleged "stolen" music tracks and graphics (the site throws up a warning on Chrome, so I won't open it myself) wouldn't require decompiling to obtain.

The "coin skip" sound effect is extremely common in Super Mario 64, certainly not difficult to rip.

In fact, I am pretty sure the ghost courtyard area with the L is Real water fountain has no music playing. Killing ghosts there would get you the coin skip sfx with minimal editing required to clean up the sound effect.

Some people in here seem to be having a hard time distinguishing the difference between making fun tributes to your favorite commercial IPs and stealing assets made by your fellow fan game developer.

Forget splitting hairs on the rest of the assets, the music alone that was made specifically for flashback should be enough evidence to back your good buddy Mors up here. Instead you ridicule him and call him out for stealing assets himself when the majority of Flashback's content was built from the ground up.

Absolutely disgusting display.

What exactly do you expect them to do about a game that's not even hosted here even if something more substantial than a checklist of what was allegedly stolen was posted to prove any of it?

Nobody has ridiculed him either, so calm thyself.

You may not like it, but proof is required before any action can be taken (if they can take any action beyond locking this thread and warning the guy in the first place). A written checklist of what's been taken is not adequate proof.

As someone who has never played Flashback and thus has not heard its music, and cannot play this game in question, if evidence that the music was 100% stolen is provided so there can be absolutely no doubt whatsoever that stolen music is what's happened

As in video or audio evidence, 'cause I am in unfortunate position of not being able to play this particular game to compare

I would instantly lock the topic and send it to Direbo and call it all a good time

I'm not saying lock the topic, I'm saying get out of here with garbage like this:

A few people assumed that I had expectations when I posted that, or I was mad at the dude, but no that's not the case lol. I knew about this game for a long time and I tried to reach to this guy on twitter yet he ignored me, so when I saw him here I thought that was my chance for some REVENGE, or rather to have fun exposing him. I just didn't think that I would need to go into detail for that. If that's what made you guys doubt me, uhh, well, whoops?

As for whether if it's okay to borrow other fangames' assets without permission or not, I already gave my basic stance on that. BUT, I don't think it's a good idea to treat Nintendo like a person. I mean, it's unethical to steal assets because that actually makes people upset. This isn't a thing with companies. Companies don't have emotions, they only care about dem moneyz. And we aren't hurting anyone's feelings by making harmless fangames. It's a way to show our love, it's glorified fanfiction in a way, and there's nothing wrong with doing this so it shouldn't be compared to stealing music from someone else's fangame without permission or credit.

But that's probably the topic of another thread sooo I will just shut up about it until someone makes a new thread.

If it's custom or handmade assets then it's not really okay to go thieving them. I'd be pretty pissed if someone just up and used my sprite edits or custom sprites from Minigame Mayhem without my permission.
