This year's World Cup has been off to an interesting start, with Germany losing their opening game and Brazil and Argentina eking out draws against much smaller-profile opponents. Iceland's population is a fraction of the size of the city where I live, but they held their own against Argentina, who made it to the 2014 final. The Portugal-Spain game was one of the most memorable opening-round World Cup games I've seen.
Also, the 2026 World Cup has been awarded to the "United Bid" of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Other than the 2002 World Cup played in Japan and South Korea, there's never been a World Cup played in more than one country. I'm not saying North America is perfect, but we're a whole lot more qualified to host the World Cup than Morocco, the other country bidding. So this'll be cool to see - even if I'm not particularly excited about the World Cup expanding to 48 teams.
Germany was my original prediction to win this year's tournament, but I'm not so sure now! It'll be interesting to see if they can rebound after losing to Mexico.
