Everyone having their own Discord server reminds me of back in the day when everyone would create their own forums and advertise those everywhere. Though I think personal Discord servers make a lot more sense- you're not really building a community around your ego (though you could), just an easy way to organize with friends. Group chats can work for this just fine a lot of the time, but I tried those out and to do voice in a group chat it calls everyone- you typically aren't looking to do a voice chat with everyone in a group chat, just the people playing a game currently or so.
The best use for 'your own' community is always going to be to fill some kind of niche- for example I have Super Mario Web Development with a focus on web development. Projects are kind of a niche as well, an example of that is I also set up the LumaSMS discord for LumaSMS development. People aren't going to be too excited to join a bunch of general purpose Discord servers, so if you're making your own and wnat it to be more than just a hangout for your friends try to figure out some niche you could fill with it that'd get people interested in it.
""We choose to go to the [Suggestions board] not because it's easy, but because it's hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win."
