Wow, seems like some people were in a Grinchy mood on Christmas Day.
When we first started talking about making an official Discord group, we saw it as a growth opportunity for MFGG. Discord was rapidly growing in popularity, and it kept adding cool new features that we thought would improve the overall MFGG experience. We never did this to spite anyone else. In fact, when we were planning the original Discord group, we didn't want the official MFGG Discord to squash other unofficial Discord groups that already had their own identity. We just thought that having an official chat group would provide a better atmosphere and higher participation than previous unofficial groups.
We always choose staff members who are enthusiastic about helping MFGG, so we most definitely care about the well-being of the community. I think a lot of staff members have gotten burnt out about the Discord - we've had some problems with conversations getting a little too heated, or people posting dumb things that are outside the boundaries of good taste. If we keep the Discord active, we'll definitely need to promote a couple more Discord mods who are good at handling real-time conversation and are usually available.
Obviously, the Discord isn't the sole source of our problems. There's a lot of people holding on to dumb grudges over things that happened years ago, and it's difficult for us to make other people bury the hatchet. However, people tend to be better-behaved in forums than in chat groups because in forums, people tend to think before they post and don't usually reply as quickly, and there's less of a tendency for arguments to snowball out of control.
