While it's possible to build your own game engine using a language like C+ or Java, most MFGGers use a tool like Game Maker, Clickteam Fusion, Godot, or Unity. I wouldn't try making a platform game in C+ or JavaScript unless I had some experience in those languages.
If you're used to the SMBX interface, you could consider Gatete's or Hello's engines. These engines include most of the features included in SMBX.
