I can somewhat relate, I joined the site around 2010 and at the time all I had was a PS2, so for a while MFGG was also where I got my Mario fix. I have so many memories playing Hello's less than stellar games and whatever else was on the site at that time.
​​​​​BTW, regardless of whether if you talk in the community or just lurk, you're an MFGGer if you consider yourself one, at least in my eyes.
And as for the ghost town thing, unfortunately these days forums are far less popular than they once were, so most of the activity is now at our Discord server. You can join there from the link on the main site sidebar if you want.
